Why are giraffe easier to spot in winter?

It's not only that the leaves thin out. Giraffe actually shift their feeding patterns as the cooler weather changes which trees are flowering and fruiting. In June they spend more time on knob-thorn acacias along the open plains, which is exactly where a lot of our game drive routes pass through.

A few other June bushveld shifts our rangers love:
🦓 Zebra and wildebeest gather near remaining water, which makes for easier sightings
🐦 Migratory birds clear out, leaving the resident species centre stage
🌳 Mopane bush turns rust-red against pale grass

The reserve does not shut down for winter. It simply rearranges the show.
