A water monitor lizard's forked tongue isn't just for tasting food; it's one of its most important tools for understanding the world around it.

By repeatedly flicking its tongue, the monitor collects tiny chemical particles from the air and ground. These are then transferred to a specialised organ in the roof of its mouth, helping it detect scents and track potential food or other animals nearby.
