A Day at The Cavern:
After breakfast, you can join in the guided party hiking into the hills for morning tea and to explore the indigenous forests where woodcutters felled yellowwood trees over a hundred years ago. Study bushman paintings, view the unspoilt splendour of one of natures finest mountain creations where the pressures of traffic and time do not exist. Swim in a 'berg stream before retu

rning with heightened appetites for a tasty lunch. There's horse riding, tennis, bowls, volley ball, swimming or trout fishing. Relaxing and enjoying the view from the front lawn on a summer's evening, or sitting in the lounge around a cozy log fire in winter, lead to sundowner conversations with new friends. This unsophisticated, well earned relaxation is what Drakensberg holidays are really about. Our luxurious Forest Retreat nestles in the canopy of The Cavern’s indigenous Fern Forest. Enjoy relaxing treatments with the peaceful sound of the Putterill's Stream cascading below. Esse skincare treatments are available. So while your body enjoys the pampering of our care, let your spirit fly free in our fabulous forest retreat. The Cavern is the "Holiday Resort of Many Happy Returns" where families enjoy their holidays with others who share similar interests; a place where lasting friendships are made!

Another story from one of our wonderful guests, shared as we look back on 85 years of Cavern memories. 🤍

“My dad, Al van Bastelaar, took me to The Cavern for the first time when I was about 10. Our room didn’t even have a bathroom.”

She remembers The Cavern when it was still very much a guest farm — Peter ran the dairy, vegetables were grown below the pool, and every holiday began by finding Mrs Ruth Carte to say hello and ended by finding her again to say goodbye. On one visit, she even stayed in the girls’ dormitory alongside Rhona, who would later become Peter’s wife.

Over the years, The Cavern became part of the van Bastelaar family story. Al later met Margaret, and their twin boys, James and Andy, spent many happy holidays here too. Even after the family moved across the world, they continued to return. Today, Al and Margaret’s ashes rest together on Surprise Ridge.

In 2024, when she turned 70 and was asked where she wanted to celebrate, there was only one answer. Friends and family travelled from New York, Malaga, Maastricht, London and Cape Town to celebrate together at The Cavern.

“We are very happy to see that even though a lot has changed, it still has the same magic.”

Thank you to the van Bastelaar family for sharing such a special piece of your family history with us.

As we count down to The Cavern’s 85th birthday this October, we’re sharing some of the stories and memories that have made these mountains part of so many families’ lives.

For Graeme Carrington and his family, that story began in the 1980s, when his parents first brought Graeme, his brother and sister to The Cavern. They returned almost every year, and nearly 40 years later, the three siblings have grown up, married and continued the tradition with six children of their own.

Graeme’s Dad was the one who taught his children, and later his grandchildren, to love the Berg. When he passed away in 2014, the family returned to The Cavern the following year with his ashes. His children and grandchildren took on the Big 5 hike together, scattering some of his ashes on each of the five peaks.
His ashes casket was laid beneath the rocks at the top of Camel, with a magnificent view over the Amphitheatre. Every year when the Carrington family returns to The Cavern, they make their way back up to find it — and it is still there.

“The Cavern will always be a special place for us.”
Almost 40 years and three generations later, we hope the tradition continues, with Graeme’s children one day bringing their own children to discover the mountains their grandfather taught them to love.

Thank you, Graeme, for sharing such a special part of your family’s Cavern story with us. 🤍

Have a Cavern memory of your own? We’d love to hear it. Share your stories and photos with us in the comments or send us a DM as we celebrate 85 years of Cavern memories.

The Cavern turns 85 this October 🎉

As we get ready to celebrate 85 years of family, friendship and memories in the mountains, we’d love to hear from the people who have been part of our story along the way — you! 💚

Perhaps you spent childhood holidays here, celebrated a special occasion, returned year after year, or simply have a Cavern memory that has stayed with you.

Throughout September, we’ll be sharing stories and memories from years gone by as we count down to our 85th birthday.

Have a Cavern story to share? Send us a DM or leave a comment with your favourite memory, story or old photograph — we’d love to hear from you and share some of your memories as part of our 85th celebrations. 🏔️

Khulu’s Chronicle 🌿

Silver wattle is one of the greatest invasive threats to the Drakensberg’s grasslands and precious water resources. At The Cavern, we’ve been clearing wattle for more than 60 years. The seeds can lie dormant for decades, only to germinate after fire or soil disturbance, so every growing season we return to poison new regrowth. It’s an ongoing commitment and investment, but one that’s essential to keeping this landscape healthy and pristine for future generations. 💚

Khulu’s Chronicle 💧
Water is one of the Drakensberg’s greatest treasures. At The Cavern, our water is collected in small mountain dams before being carefully filtered and chlorinated for safe drinking. The result is pure, crisp mountain water that’s wonderfully refreshing.

For guests who prefer an extra level of filtration, we’ve also installed the Topia Water system, so there’s no need to buy plastic bottled water. Simply bring your own refillable bottle or pick up one of our Cavern lizard water bottles during your stay and enjoy fresh mountain water while helping us reduce single-use plastic. Every refill is a small step towards protecting this special place. 💚🌿
