**SPECIES HIGHLIGHT No 11 : the Njala**

❓❓Have you ever thought of comparing a Njala and a Kudu❓❓

The main differences between a nyala and a kudu are their size, horn shape, and coat stripes. Kudu are much larger with long, wide-spiraling corkscrew horns, while nyala are medium-sized with shorter, tighter horns and a darker coat.

Size and Build
Kudu: Very large and tall; males weigh up to 270–315 kg and have a noticeable shoulder hump.
Nyala: Medium-sized; males weigh around 98–125 kg with a smaller, less prominent hump.

Horns
Kudu: Long, majestic horns that make 2 to 2.5 open, wide corkscrew turns.
Nyala: Shorter, simpler horns with only about one tight twist and a distinct yellow/white tip.

Color and Stripes
Kudu: Grey-brown or reddish-brown coat with fewer (about 4 to 12), distinct vertical white stripes.
Nyala: Dark brown or slate-grey coat in adult males with many more (up to 18) fine, prominent white stripes. Females and young nyala are a bright reddish-tan with very clear stripes

**SPECIES HIGHLIGHT**No 10 : IMPALA

The impala (Phala in Setswana)
Scientific name(Aepyceros melampus)is a medium-sized African antelope renowned for its remarkable agility, speed, and distinctive coat markings. A key prey species in the African savanna, it plays a vital role in its ecosystem.

Key Characteristics

Scientific Name: Aepyceros melampus (the sole member of its genus, Aepyceros).

Appearance: Impalas have a glossy, reddish-brown coat with lighter flanks and a white underbelly. Key markings include white rings around the eyes, black-tipped ears, a black stripe running down the lower back and tail, and vertical black stripes on the rear of each thigh (forming an "M" shape on the rump).

Horns: Only males (rams) have horns, which are long, slender, and lyre-shaped (curved and twisting) and can measure up to 90 cm (35 inches) in length.

Size: They stand about 70–92 cm (28–36 inches) tall at the shoulder. Males weigh 53–76 kg (117–168 pounds), while females (ewes) weigh 40–53 kg (88–117 pounds).

Habitat and Behavior

Distribution: Impalas are widespread across eastern and southern Africa, found in countries like Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Botswana, Zambia, and South Africa.

Habitat: They prefer light woodlands, savannas, and areas near water sources, as they can both graze on grasses during the wet season and browse on shrubs and leaves during the dry season.

Social Structure: They are highly social, forming three main types of herds: female (breeding) herds (up to 100 individuals), bachelor herds of non-territorial males, and solitary territorial males during the rut.
Anti-Predator Adaptations: Their primary defense is escape through impressive athleticism. Impalas can:Leap up to 3 meters (10 feet) high and cover distances of 10 meters (33 feet) in a single bound.
Run at speeds of over 90 kilometers per hour (55 miles per hour).
Scatter in many directions when startled to confuse predators (a behavior known as "bomb-shelling").
Use scent glands on their hind legs to help the herd regroup after scattering.

Conservation Status
The common impala is classified as a species of Least Concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), due to a large and stable population. However, the black-faced impala subspecies (Aepyceros melampus petersi), found only in parts of Namibia and Angola, is classified as Vulnerable.
