🧄 GROWING GARLIC — A LABOUR OF LOVE

Growing garlic is a patient game.

It takes more than simply putting a clove into the soil. It takes good seed, the right variety for your climate, healthy soil, careful management — and nearly nine months of patience.

And when harvest finally arrives, the work is still not done. Every bulb is lifted by hand, cleaned, cured and prepared with care.

At Shiloh Edible Gardens, growing high-quality food has never been about mass production.

We grow with passion and purpose. We want to restore our connection with the soil, rebuild our knowledge of naturally grown food, and remind people of the incredible value of knowing where their food comes from.

Garlic is one of the most treasured plants in our garden. For generations it has been valued as both food and traditional medicine, and we believe it deserves to be grown and presented with the same respect.

We grow garlic because we love our soil.
We grow it because we believe in pure, high-quality food.
And we grow it because some things are worth waiting nine months for. 🌱🧄

Our October harvest is almost here, and we cannot wait to lift these beautiful bulbs from the soil.

🌱 Welcome to our newest Shiloh Edible Garden — the Tribe of Zebulun! ⛵

Zebulun means “home” or “dwelling”, a perfect name for the Aliwal North Primary School Hostel Garden. This special garden will help provide fresh vegetables for the hostel kitchen while teaching children the lifelong skill of growing their own food. 🌱

Our Twelve Beds of Faithfulness have officially been planted, and we are incredibly proud of the team who worked so hard to make it happen!

A huge thank you to ATKV for believing in this vision and making this garden possible.

What an amazing day at Aliwal North Primary School! 🌱💚

Today was about so much more than building a vegetable garden — it was about planting knowledge, growing confidence and teaching our children to love the soil and understand where their food comes from.

This project was proudly sponsored by the ATKV Regional Branch, with a shared vision of empowering young people with the skills to grow their own food and helping create a sustainable supply of fresh vegetables for the school hostel kitchen.

Shiloh Edible Gardens had the privilege of leading the project, presenting the principles behind a sustainable vegetable garden and getting everyone involved in learning by doing. 🌿

What a wonderful day of dirty hands, new knowledge, enthusiasm and teamwork! We left knowing that we didn’t just plant vegetables today — we planted skills that can last a lifetime.

Thank you to everyone who supported, participated and believed in this garden. Now we grow! 🌱

🌱 When you live out your talent and purpose, things eventually start falling into place. 💚

ATKV activated yet another vegetable garden today — this time at the Aliwal North Primary School Hostel!

The first phase will consist of 12 rotational beds, each 1 m × 2 m, based on the Farming God’s Way principles. We’ll be implementing a six-line rotational planting system with a variety of crops including beans, spinach, beetroot and spring onions.

What makes this garden even more special is knowing that the produce will go straight into the hostel kitchen, helping to provide fresh, nutritious food while teaching the value of growing what we eat. 🌱🥬

I am so excited to watch this little garden grow, develop and produce!

And what a fun day we had getting it started! 🙌

A huge thank you to ATKV and everyone involved for the support, enthusiasm and incredible buy-in. Every garden we activate is another seed planted for something much bigger. 🌱❤️

Spring 2026 | Mzimkhulu Primary School - The Tribe of Naphtali

What a successful morning of vegetable planting! The children and school always support this garden with such enthusiasm, and it is an absolute joy to see. 💚

This season feels especially exciting — our new irrigation is in, the eucalyptus trees are being removed, and our garden will finally have the full sun it needs to flourish.

Fresh soil, little hands, new seedlings and a whole season of possibility ahead.

God bless this garden, the hands that tend it, and the harvest still to come.

3,000 Seedlings delivered right to my doorstep! 🌱

And we’re already growing the next batches! Lettuce, pumpkin, herbs, tomatoes, aubergine, spring onions, spinach, beetroot and more — getting ready for planting season in the Karoo. 🌿

If you don’t have a nursery nearby… make a plan! 💪🏼🌱

One of the best parts is teaching the kids how to work with seedlings — sowing, sorting and organising trays, and planning what needs to be ready for the weeks ahead.

Next stop: planting at Lulama Futshane Youth Centre and Mzimkhulu Primary School, Burgersdorp. ❤️
