One moment it’s silence and sweeping views across the Sabi Sand, the next it’s a herd of elephants moving through the bush just metres away. Somewhere down the line, a leopard slips between the trees, and the wild keeps unfolding in its own rhythm.

The fastest animal on land…

The body of a cheetah is built purely for acceleration and sprinting. Nearly every part of it helps it move faster. From the flexible spine, long legs, semi-retractable claws, long tail for steering, lightweight body and fast twitch muscle fibres.

One of the latest sightings at Elephant Plains was Tortoise Pan male leopard coming across a dead hippo and trying to take advantage of this.

The challenge? A hippo’s skin is incredibly thick and tough, almost like natural armour. Even for a powerful predator like a leopard, breaking through it is no easy task. He circled, tested different spots and kept trying to sink his teeth in, looking for a way through.

One of those rare sightings that shows the patience, curiosity and persistence predators need to survive in the wild.
