Some things simply cannot be captured in a photograph.

The feeling of setting off for a walk with nowhere you particularly need to be is one of them.

French philosopher Frédéric Gros wrote an entire book about walking. Not walking for fitness. Not counting kilometres or chasing a personal best.

Just walking. There is something that happens when you put one foot in front of the other for long enough.
Your breathing settles. The noise in your head starts to soften. Thoughts that felt tangled begin to find a little space between them.

You notice things again. The sound of your feet on the ground. A bird somewhere in the distance. The change in the air. The way the landscape looks completely different when you are moving through it slowly instead of watching it pass through a window.

And perhaps that is part of what we have forgotten.
Not everything we do needs a purpose.

At Black Eagle Lodges, there is space to walk. Proper space. The kind that cannot really be explained with one beautiful photograph or even a collection of them.
You have to come here. Put your shoes on. Leave your phone behind if you dare.

And walk until you remember what it feels like to have nowhere else you need to be

Last minute plans are sometimes the very best kind.

The Villa and The Cottage have unexpectedly opened up for this weekend, 4–6 September, which means you could be swapping the week for fynbos, canola fields, big blue skies, slow mornings and a hot tub before Friday is even over.

Spring is starting to show off at Black Eagle Lodges and this is such a beautiful time to be on the farm.

And rugby lovers, you do not have to miss the game. Botrivier Hotel is only around 20 minutes away if you are after a big screen and a little match-day atmosphere.

There is also WiFi in both The Villa and The Cottage for those who would rather keep an eye on the score from the farm.

Two nights. No agenda. Just arrive.

The Villa and The Cottage are available this weekend.

Hello September.

There is something about this time of year that feels like a little exhale.

The days are getting warmer. The evenings still have that cool bite that makes you reach for a jersey, light the fire and settle in for the night. Nature is slowly waking up around us and there is a definite feeling that a new season has begun.

Maybe it is time you gave yourself one too.

We spend so much of our lives rushing from one thing to the next. Work. Family. Deadlines. Responsibilities. The endless list of things that apparently cannot wait.
But you can only run on empty for so long.

Sometimes looking after yourself looks like getting away for a few days. Sleeping a little later. Walking without checking the time. Drinking your coffee while it is still hot. Sitting outside because the sun feels good on your face. Putting your phone down. Breathing deeper. Doing absolutely nothing without feeling guilty about it.

September is one of our favourite times at Black Eagle Lodges.

Warm enough to spend the day outside. Cool enough to light the fire in the evening. Quiet enough to hear yourself think again.

Perhaps this is your sign to make a little space for yourself this spring.

You deserve to feel rested too.

HOT TUB TIP NO. 1: LIGHT IT EARLY

Do not wait until you want to get in.

Light the fire early, pour yourself something nice and enjoy the process. Half the fun is in the setting up. Feeding the fire, checking the water, chatting while you wait and knowing that later, when the air is cold and the stars are out, that hot tub is going to feel very, very good.

Think of it a little like standing around a braai. There is no need to rush it. The anticipation is part of the fun.

What should you bring?

A gown for the chilly walk back inside. Slippers or slip slops. Your favourite drink, hot or cold. A book if you plan on staying awhile. A swimsuit... although we will let you decide how essential that one is.

Then climb in, settle back and let the warm water do its thing.

After a day spent walking, cycling or exploring the farm, there are few better ways to end it.

Fire crackling. Cold air. Hot water. Mountain views.

Now that is a farm stay.

Working remotely does not always have to mean sitting at the same desk, staring at the same view.

Sometimes, a change of scenery is exactly what your mind and soul need.
Set up beside the crackling fire. Take a midday walk through the mountains. Brave a cold plunge if you are feeling bold, or turn your lunch break into a quiet soak in the wood fired hot tub.

You can still answer the emails, attend the meetings and finish the work. You are simply doing it somewhere that gives you a little more space to breathe.

Working between four walls does not mean they have to be the four walls you own.

Take a break from the routine without taking a break from work.

Book a midweek farm stay at Black Eagle Lodges and make remote working feel a little less like work.

Board games have a way of bringing out everyone’s competitive side.

Set up on the stoep, gather around the fire, claim your spot at the dining table or take the game outside and spread a blanket on the grass.

It starts innocently enough.

A few laughs. A little strategy. Someone quietly changing the rules to suit themselves. Someone else insisting they are not competitive while keeping very close track of the score.

Before long, alliances are formed, rivalries are renewed and the winner will be talking about it for the rest of the weekend.

That is part of the fun.

Slow afternoons, full tables, plenty of teasing and time together without everyone rushing off to the next thing.

Bring your favourite game and prepare to defend your title or choose from the one or two games we have at each lodge.

A walk with a view. A run with room to breathe.

Our 4km and 7km farm trails take you through open landscapes, mountain views and fynbos that is currently in bloom.

Take it slowly and notice the colours. Pick up the pace and let the fresh air clear your head. Stop for a moment, listen to the farm and enjoy being somewhere that feels far removed from the everyday.

Whether you are here to move, explore or simply stretch your legs before heading back to the fire, the trails are waiting.

Pack your takkies. The farm is looking especially beautiful right now.

Pack your bike and come wander through the farm.

Cycle past fields glowing with canola, take in the mountain views and follow the quiet farm roads wherever they lead.

There is no need to rush.

Stop for the view. Listen to the birds. Feel the fresh air. Pack a small picnic, find a quiet spot along the way and make an afternoon of it.

And for the serious riders, September brings the Canola Roller Gravel Grind to Greyton.

Taking place on Saturday, 19 September, riders can choose between 30km, 80km and 130km routes through some of the Overberg’s most beautiful canola country.

Planning to ride? Book your Black Eagle Lodges accommodation early and turn race weekend into a proper farm getaway.

A bicycle. An open road. Big skies. Golden fields. Time to explore.

Teach them to cast, not scroll.

There is something special about standing beside the water with your children or grandchildren, showing them how to hold the rod, watching them practise their first cast and sharing the quiet excitement of waiting for a bite.

It is time together without notifications, rushing or distractions.

Just fresh air, patient teaching, plenty of encouragement and the kind of stories that will be retold long after the weekend is over.

The dams at The Lodge and The Villa are stocked with tilapia and bass. A third dam is stocked with rainbow trout and managed by the Hermanus Fly Fishing Club.

Fly fishing is strictly by prior arrangement. Guests must bring their own equipment, and all fishing is catch and release. Please enquire before your stay.
The real catch might just be a little more time together.

July, you were cold, cosy and already turning gold.

The fires worked overtime. The gumboots earned their keep. The hot tubs were worth the cold dash. The board games got competitive. And the canola fields decided there was no need to wait for August.

Then came those beautiful Western Cape winter days. Crisp, clear and sunny, with blue skies that warm the soul and make you feel very lucky to be here.

Winter on the farm is slow, cosy, a little wild and always better shared.

Now the fields are glowing yellow and the canola will be at its best over the next few weeks.

So if seeing the Overberg dressed in gold is on your list, book, book, book.

Black Eagle Lodges is ready when you are.
