Mel Botes is a South African guitar virtuoso, singer, composer, and poet known for inventive, deeply personal conceptual rock shows. His music fuses his classical training with jazz, blues, and the sweeping influences of Pink Floyd, AC/DC, Dire Straits, The Beatles and more, often swinging between bittersweet ballads and sudden storms of noise/explosive energy.
His first commercial breakthrough was the four-part rock opera David’s Confession, now considered a cornerstone of South African rock, and later he created the acclaimed show Crazy Diamond – A Tribute to Pink Floyd. Other works include Flight of Bird, a multimedia rock extravaganza, and the Afrikaans concept album Oomblik van Waansin, which won him the Geraas Music award: Songwriter of the Year in 2001.
In 2005 Mel shared the stage with Queen, Will Smith, Katy Melua, Annie Lennox, and Paul Rodgers at Nelson Mandela’s 46664 concert. He has composed for film and television and acted in the popular t.v. series Song vir Katryn. He is currently writing interactive audiovisual book for Flight of Bird. In August 2026, his rock opera returns internationally with David’s Confession – About Time Chapter 2.
He is currently working on the very final stages of his original work: The River Symphony which comprise of 8 movements and will be released internationally at the end of September 2026.
Mel owns an independent recording, production and publishing label called Afrimuse Records.
