Writer, columnist and chief sub-editor, Tony Jackman, recently visited the Hantam Huis while preparing his new cookbook, Retro Karoo Food. During his stay, he captured a selection of illustrations and photographs from the Hantam Huis and our guesthouses, bringing the space and its character into the pages of the book.

Filled with traditional, home-style recipes, Retro Karoo Food celebrates the flavours of the Karoo and is now available at the Hantam Huis shop.

Skrywer, rubriekskrywer en hoofsubredakteur, Tony Jackman, het onlangs die Hantam Huis besoek terwyl hy aan sy nuwe kookboek, Retro Karoo Food, gewerk het. Tydens sy verblyf het hy ’n verskeidenheid illustrasies en foto’s van Hantam Huis en ons gastehuise vasgevang, wat die karakter en atmosfeer van die plek in die boek vaslê.

Gevul met tradisionele, boereresepte, vier Retro Karoo Food die smake van die Karoo en is nou beskikbaar by die Hantam Huis Winkel.

The 4x4 Sport Group recently stopped at the Hantam Huis as part of their tour. It was a wonderful few evenings filled with great company, delicious food, and a relaxed spit braai at Bothasdal.

Vandag op die spyskaart is ons Wildspastei!

Interessante feit – in Suid-Afrika gebruik ons die “fynvleis” tegniek om wildspasteie te maak en dit is presies wat dit onderskei van die wildspasteie oor die res van die wêreld.

Internasionaal word wildspasteie meestal met blokkies vleis voorberei, terwyl Suid-Afrikaners verkies om die vleis fyn te maal.

Boonop hou ons by ’n meer soet-suur smaakprofiel, wat die gereg sy kenmerkende plaaslike smaak gee!

On today’s menu is our Game Pie!

An interesting fact – in South Africa, we use the “fynvleis” (finely minced meat) technique when making game pies, and this is what sets them apart from game pies found elsewhere in the world.

Internationally, game pies are usually prepared with cubed meat, while South Africans prefer the meat finely minced.

We also prefer a more sweet-and-sour flavour profile, which gives the dish its distinctive local character.
