We have used the final funds of our Charity project, which we started during Covid-19. With a big smile Eral, who is part of the Kalk Bay Family and Community, got his brand new Sleeping bag this morning and was extremly excited about this gift.

There will be soon another 19 homeless people in Kalk Bay that will get this gift, to make sure they stay warm during the nights.

Thanks again to all the help we have received to make this difficult situation a little easier for some of the people in our community. 😬

We made it! But we couldn’t made it without YOUR help!
We would like to send our a HUGE THANK YOU AGAIN, to all our Guests from Chartfield Guesthouse and Salt, who have so generously donated to our community project during this very difficult times.

With the help from Wibernet Solutions, we managed to provide WIFI for the St. James Primary School in Kalk Bay as well as 20 students from the Fisherman’s Village for an entire Year.
We would also like to say thank you to Wibernet, who have donated a lot of the equipment for this project and for their time and passion to make this happen. It is amazing to know that these kids have now the possibility for a whole year to do online schooling and studying.

The school, the kids and the families in the Village are over the Moon and they are extremely grateful for all the help they have received.

Once again, Thank you to everyone that helped to make this happen and we cannot wait to see you all again in Kalk Bay.

We all fondly remember how Kalk Bay was named "the coolest neighbourhood in the world" by Forbes in 2018 (awesome - right?)

Well, it's happening again....

This time our much loved tidal pool "Dalebrook" has been listed as "one of the world's best places for a swim" by CNN.

*NEWS JUST IN* When we can host guests again, we have the feeling our 'Do Not Disturb' signs will be more frequently on display outside the rooms.

Why?

Well, yet again, we have used this lock down to improve the experiences for our guests when we re-open and have now replaced all our beds with COCO-MAT bases and mattresses; promising ridiculous comfort and they are 100% organic.

You may wonder what Coco-Mat beds are and why we feel they are superior to our previous luxury beds. This is why:

- They are 3 layered beds, with a base, a mattress and a topper.
- The 'Topper' is made from natural rubber which gives perfect elasticity and comfort. Suitable for all body types and sleep systems.
- The 'Mattress' offers different types of elasticity on each side, allowing you to choose between elastic or less elastic. The 'Mattress' emits a natural slow release of iodine which assists breathing (via the inclusion of {believe it or not} seaweed).
- The 'Base' is completely organic with cotton covers.

History of Kalk Bay (Part 11 – The Olympia building)

The Olympia building has had many reincarnations. Today the Olympia Café and Deli is an enormously popular restaurant and the working bakery is always a hub of activity. Most people don't know that what is now the bakery used to be a bioscope and later was a club and disco. The offices on the top floor of the building were once a brothel.

Here's an extract from Michael Walker's book on Kalk Bay, "In 1931 with the introduction of sound an operator's box was added by Messrs African Theatres Ltd. The then owner Mr S. Zachron did extensive improvements especially with the introduction of an upstairs gallery. Thereafter Goles, the new owner, renamed it the Olympia Bioscope and it was a popular venue until the interior was burnt out in 1968. Locals invariably attended the bioscope and each Saturday night it was filled with the characters of Kalk Bay. The whites sat downstairs, the coloureds upstairs. Sometimes the coloureds would throw peanuts down onto the whites much to the annoyance of not only those who were hit, but also of the manger who than the unenviable job of sorting out the problem. It was, however, harmless fun and at interval both whites and coloureds would make a bee-line for the two bars at the New Kings which lay opposite the bioscope to 'stoke up' before the main film. Smoking was allowed in cinemas in those days and it was not unusual for some white patrons to move upstairs to avoid the odours of Mr Pick's (the family butcher) cigars. He had a permanent seat for many years on the corner of the middle isle each Saturday night, and there he proceeded to chain smoke cigars through the entire film, much to the discomfort of those who sat behind him." The Olympia Café was also the local Greek café, which explains the name. For many years the café on the corner in Kalk Bay was owned and run by Alexandre Bassios a Greek immigrant who arrived in South Africa from Albania in 1934. Over time he bought the Olympia building and the small plot of land just behind it. Alex Bassios of Kalk Bay vineyards carries his grandfather's name and grew up packing bait and working in his father's shop.
