𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱 - 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝗲 𝗘𝗽𝗶𝗰 𝟭𝟱 – 𝟮𝟮 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟬

Last weekend was supposed to be the start of the mammoth week-long mountain bike event around the Western Cape – The Cape Epic. At the 11th hours before the event, Cape Epic organizers sent out a statement informing their cancelation of the event due to the COVID-19. This decision was carefully considered prior to the cancelation of the event as the event organizers work closely with health officials and disaster management. Despite the very low numbers of infection in the Western Cape, the number of riders and fans that were flying in for the event was simply what made it a high-risk event.

Most fans and contestants including some of our own guests who were also meant to be participating in the race were sorely disappointed. However, the decision taken was necessary as the safety and health of everyone is of paramount importance!!!

We, T House Team, can’t stop thinking about what the "𝗖𝗢𝗩𝗜𝗗-𝟭𝟵" crisis may do to the underprivileged in South Africa and the world. We are not scared of the virus for our own health as we know our bodies can handle it, but what if we carry it to someone whose immune system can’t fight it as ours can? The privileged will be able to deal with the economic consequences that will fall on them, but how about those who already have very little? We need to act now to protect the most vulnerable!

"Behind each guest review score are real human experiences. Real Smiles. Real connections. Real lifelong memories... With that in mind, we're delighted to present your Booking.com Traveller Review Award for 2020."

Thanks to 61 groups of guests who gave us feedback in the past two years, T House received 9 out of 10 in our overall review score. We have grown from "Very good" (2018), "Fabulous" (2019), to our new status --- "Superb" (2020).

To T House guests - our heartfelt thanks to you for taking time to review us, but more importantly, thanks for every smile, every connection, and every memory you shared with us.

𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝘂𝗰𝗶𝘂𝘀 - the German Shepard whom we all know for acting macho and his none stop barking yet he is as harmless as the baby that he is. Due to his need for a playmate, last month he had to be taken away to a dog shelter for some socializing training as well as finding him a compatible playmate whom they’ll get along with. He ended up spending two weeks at the shelter then finally returned with his match made playmate – Dodo.

𝗗𝗼𝗱𝗼 - the smaller female dog, who is our new additional bundle of joy! She’s a Blue Lacy Dog, and she’s been with us for less than a month now. Her breed is known for being energetic, intelligent and calm. Due to her calmness you might mistake her for being shy, which isn’t the case - so whenever you are at T House and come across her please kindly give her a hug or a kiss and she’ll simply warm up to you.

All the way from Klerksdorp and straight into T House, their very 1st Cape Town home away from home. Our jolly guests intended to stay with us for only a few days but fate said otherwise and they ended staying with us for a whole month🤗

The two 'jolly' gens made hosting them feel like we were just roomies with their down to earth spirit. They are simply the jolliest mlungus (Whites) that you'll probably ever come across as they are just too chill. Every moment with them is just jolly, crazy and awesome. For those that know them I'm definitely sure that you'll agree with me saying that a dull moment with them doesn't exist❗️

They indeed brought life to T House and made us all come alive with a jolly spirit.

𝐇𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐲 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟎!

𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐚𝐭

The Rat is considered as being the first of all Chinese zodiac animals.

According to one myth, the Jade Emperor said the order would be decided by the order in which they arrived at his party. The Rat tricked the Ox into giving him a ride. Then, just as they arrived at the finish line, Rat jumped down and landed ahead of Ox, becoming first.

The Rat is also associated with the Earthly Branch (地支—dì zhī) Zi (子) and the midnight hours. In terms of yin and yang (阴阳—yīn yáng), the Rat is yang and represents the beginning of a new day.

In Chinese culture, rats were seen as a sign of wealth and surplus. Because of their reproduction rate, married couples also prayed to them for children.

The evening was a moment to remember, an evening filled with a mouth-watering feast as well as a great company with an awesome vibe, homely atmosphere, and down to earth energy. Happy Year of the Rat!!!

2019 was a wonderful year for T House, filled with new adventures, friendships, endeavours and activities for us and we would like to thank all our guests and friends for your continuous support, commitment and encouragement as we tackled the year. To celebrate our growing friendships, we had a special global friendships themed dreamcatcher made for T House to bless our ever-growing circle of friends. We had a memorable year and here is a small glimpse of a few key highlights of what we did over the course of the past year in pictures:

I have become accustomed to hosting different kinds of guests. However, last week I had a very unusual encounter with a different kind of guest from the usual. It all started like any other guest check-in, first the intercom rang, our hosts went to open for the guests, they checked into their room and joined our hosts for tea a T Table. While all this was happening, I was sitting in the master bedroom, sniffing from the small gap between the door and the floor to be precise for an unusual scent that the guests had. At first I couldn’t make out what it was exactly, except I could tell it was definitely not a human scent. That’s when I heard it, a bark! I completely lost it as I was trying to figure out who is this other dog in our house, was it an intruder, was I being replaced, was I getting a little brother or sister? All these questions ran through my mind. It later turned out that I was being worried over nothing as the new dog was none of the above mentioned, she was merely a guest traveling with her owners. Simple as this may sound.

A few days ago we had a wonderful German family staying with us here at T House. As our hosts had a cup of coffee with our guests, I realised how privileged we were here in Cape Town and Africa as a whole to have not only the space, but the time as well as a lifestyle suitable enough for us to enjoy the simpler things in life such as having a garden and backyard with trees. This realisation came about when I heard the wife pointed out to us that she had never seen an avocado tree, something that came as a surprise to me considering how plentiful the trees are here. It got me thinking of how urbanization comes with a price, and made me recall something one of our permanent residents once said about Africa and why he keeps coming, “Africa is a wonderful slow moving place where one gets to be at one with themselves and nature,'' referring to his experience in Kenya where he owns a farm. Our permanent resident also pointed out how people make a trade-off when they develop their cities to “modern world class” standards, they lose their slow quiet lives to a fast paced noisy life and also trade off their backyards for tall high rise buildings without backyards in the name of modernity and urbanization.

Staying and working in at T House, I get to see and meet a lot of people, from different countries, races, religions and professions. Of all the groups of people I get in contact with here at T House, I am always surprised by how my fellow Africans, particularly the black ones seem to be intimidated by me, not because I am fierce looking or aggressive, but simply because I am a dog. I have no prejudice over these guests, however I wanted to find out what the root cause of this fear of dogs comes from. From what I heard from one of our hosts, it appears the largest contributing factor to this fear is the fact that in most African societies, we dogs, serve primarily the purpose of security as guard dogs in houses and in some cases, especially in rural Africa, we serve as hunting dogs. As a result of these two primary functions, we are naturally required to be aggressive, so when someone that views me in this light meets me at T House, they are immediately struck by fear as they assume I will be aggressive as my counterparts in their parts of the world are. To make matters worse for me, my particular breed, German Shepherd, is used by the police as assistants in their operations because of our acute sense of smell and ability to listen, and this only asserts the grip of fear on these poor people's minds as police dogs are also known for their aggression towards potential criminals and crooks. At one point, we had a guest staying with us for a week from Nigeria who was so afraid of me that, she had to ask our hosts if they were home before she came in and we had to move her into another room for the sake of making her feel comfortable and welcomed. In her defense, she said that,”...I’ve never had good experiences with dogs before.”

Life of a security guard
T House
Like everyone, I wake up in the morning and do a bit of exercise, this is usually in the form of a walk for me and the occasional game of catch, where I play with my green ball and run after it when it gets thrown away.

After that, we go back to T House where I have breakfast, join the guests for breakfast and just take a nap under T Table listening to the various interesting discussions that occur there.

After breakfast with the guests, there isn’t much else for me to do so I go on my rounds, run around the yard, sniffing any new scents and try to figure out where they came from, I occasionally chase of the squirrels that come over the fence into our avocado tree, bark at the dog next door, run around a bit in the yard and then just spend the day keeping guard and napping.

This is my usual routine and everything else happens in between this routine, I enjoy simplicity and this is as simple as life can get!

At T House, hundreds of people pass through our home every year staying with us for different reasons and different lengths as the year goes. Every now and again we come across outstanding guests that eventually become more than guests to us and end up being our friends and distinguished members of our diverse family – our ‘Permanent Residence’. At first glance you would not suspect that these individuals are any different from the rest of our guests however, as you spend time with them and convers with them over breakfast at T Table where we mingle with our guests and exchange ideas and opinions on life in general, that’s when you begin to see how wonderful people they are as they share their stories and experiences in life with you. I will start with our honourable distinguished guest Mr.D, from the USA. Mr.D Mr. D is a qualified tax lawyer who could work and live anywhere in the world and do almost anything he would want with his life but instead he spends his time in Africa because he loves mankind or simply in his own words, he is coming back to his “roots” in Africa. The levels to which this gentleman goes to help others is simply remarkable; the places he goes to see and help people are simply unthinkable to other people, but he goes all the same because that’s the person kind of person he is. All this happens during the day after breakfast at T Table where he adds a unique distinct flavour to the table discussions which always leave people questioning either the world or themselves. It is because of this uniqueness of his character and friendship with us that our honoured guest Mr. D has been offered our ‘Permanent Resident’ status, the highest honor we bestow upon our guests after serious deliberations with the T House team, including Mr. Confucius. As a perk, our Permanent Residents enjoy a number of benefits such as ridiculously large discounts, guaranteed rooms no matter how full we are (sofa? garden? We’ll find space!) among plenty of other benefits.
