Last weekend was supposed to be the start of the mammoth week-long mountain bike event around the Western Cape โ€“ The Cape Epic. At the 11th hours before the event, Cape Epic organizers sent out a statement informing their cancelation of the event due to the COVID-19. This decision was carefully considered prior to the cancelation of the event as the event organizers work closely with health officials and disaster management. Despite the very low numbers of infection in the Western Cape, the number of riders and fans that were flying in for the event was simply what made it a high-risk event.

Most fans and contestants including some of our own guests who were also meant to be participating in the race were sorely disappointed. However, the decision taken was necessary as the safety and health of everyone is of paramount importance!!!

We, T House Team, canโ€™t stop thinking about what the "๐—–๐—ข๐—ฉ๐—œ๐——-๐Ÿญ๐Ÿต" crisis may do to the underprivileged in South Africa and the world. We are not scared of the virus for our own health as we know our bodies can handle it, but what if we carry it to someone whose immune system canโ€™t fight it as ours can? The privileged will be able to deal with the economic consequences that will fall on them, but how about those who already have very little? We need to act now to protect the most vulnerable!

๐—–๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ณ๐˜‚๐—ฐ๐—ถ๐˜‚๐˜€ - the German Shepard whom we all know for acting macho and his none stop barking yet he is as harmless as the baby that he is. Due to his need for a playmate, last month he had to be taken away to a dog shelter for some socializing training as well as finding him a compatible playmate whom theyโ€™ll get along with. He ended up spending two weeks at the shelter then finally returned with his match made playmate โ€“ Dodo.

๐——๐—ผ๐—ฑ๐—ผ - the smaller female dog, who is our new additional bundle of joy! Sheโ€™s a Blue Lacy Dog, and sheโ€™s been with us for less than a month now. Her breed is known for being energetic, intelligent and calm. Due to her calmness you might mistake her for being shy, which isnโ€™t the case - so whenever you are at T House and come across her please kindly give her a hug or a kiss and sheโ€™ll simply warm up to you.

All the way from Klerksdorp and straight into T House, their very 1st Cape Town home away from home. Our jolly guests intended to stay with us for only a few days but fate said otherwise and they ended staying with us for a whole month๐Ÿค—

The two 'jolly' gens made hosting them feel like we were just roomies with their down to earth spirit. They are simply the jolliest mlungus (Whites) that you'll probably ever come across as they are just too chill. Every moment with them is just jolly, crazy and awesome. For those that know them I'm definitely sure that you'll agree with me saying that a dull moment with them doesn't existโ—๏ธ

They indeed brought life to T House and made us all come alive with a jolly spirit.

The Rat is considered as being the first of all Chinese zodiac animals.

According to one myth, the Jade Emperor said the order would be decided by the order in which they arrived at his party. The Rat tricked the Ox into giving him a ride. Then, just as they arrived at the finish line, Rat jumped down and landed ahead of Ox, becoming first.

The Rat is also associated with the Earthly Branch (ๅœฐๆ”ฏโ€”dรฌ zhฤซ) Zi (ๅญ) and the midnight hours. In terms of yin and yang (้˜ด้˜ณโ€”yฤซn yรกng), the Rat is yang and represents the beginning of a new day.

In Chinese culture, rats were seen as a sign of wealth and surplus. Because of their reproduction rate, married couples also prayed to them for children.

2019 was a wonderful year for T House, filled with new adventures, friendships, endeavours and activities for us and we would like to thank all our guests and friends for your continuous support, commitment and encouragement as we tackled the year. To celebrate our growing friendships, we had a special global friendships themed dreamcatcher made for T House to bless our ever-growing circle of friends. We had a memorable year and here is a small glimpse of a few key highlights of what we did over the course of the past year in pictures:

I have become accustomed to hosting different kinds of guests. A few days ago we had a wonderful German family staying with us here at T House. As our hosts had a cup of coffee with our guests, I realised how privileged we were here in Cape Town and Africa as a whole to have not only the space, but the time as well as a lifestyle suitable enough for us to enjoy the simpler things in life such as having a garden and backyard with trees. This realisation came about when I heard the wife pointed out to us that she had never seen an avocado tree, something that came as a surprise to me considering how plentiful the trees are here. It got me thinking of how urbanization comes with a price, and made me recall something one of our permanent residents once said about Africa and why he keeps coming, โ€œAfrica is a wonderful slow moving place where one gets to be at one with themselves and nature,'' referring to his experience in Kenya where he owns a farm. Our permanent resident also pointed out how people make a trade-off when they develop their cities to โ€œmodern world classโ€ standards, they lose their slow quiet lives to a fast paced noisy life and also trade off their backyards for tall high rise buildings without backyards in the name of modernity and urbanization.

Staying and working in at T House, I get to see and meet a lot of people, from different countries, races, religions and professions. Of all the groups of people I get in contact with here at T House, I am always surprised by how my fellow Africans, particularly the black ones seem to be intimidated by me, not because I am fierce looking or aggressive, but simply because I am a dog. I have no prejudice over these guests, however I wanted to find out what the root cause of this fear of dogs comes from. From what I heard from one of our hosts, it appears the largest contributing factor to this fear is the fact that in most African societies, we dogs, serve primarily the purpose of security as guard dogs in houses and in some cases, especially in rural Africa, we serve as hunting dogs. As a result of these two primary functions, we are naturally required to be aggressive, so when someone that views me in this light meets me at T House, they are immediately struck by fear as they assume I will be aggressive as my counterparts in their parts of the world are. To make matters worse for me, my particular breed, German Shepherd, is used by the police as assistants in their operations because of our acute sense of smell and ability to listen, and this only asserts the grip of fear on these poor people's minds as police dogs are also known for their aggression towards potential criminals and crooks. At one point, we had a guest staying with us for a week from Nigeria who was so afraid of me that, she had to ask our hosts if they were home before she came in and we had to move her into another room for the sake of making her feel comfortable and welcomed. In her defense, she said that,โ€...Iโ€™ve never had good experiences with dogs before.โ€
