There are courts in parts of Africa where judges have been applying laws they've never actually read — not because they're negligent, but because the law simply wasn't accessible to them.

Greg Kempe, co-founder of Laws.Africa, shared that with us this week. It's the kind of detail that makes you sit back for a second.

Laws.Africa is a Cape Town-based nonprofit digitising legal information across twenty African countries — legislation, court judgments, government gazettes — and making it freely available online. Greg built the technology side of it after six years at Amazon, a burnout, and a walk along the Sea Point Promenade that somehow led to municipal bylaws.

The conversation covers how the nonprofit actually sustains itself, why generative AI needs grounded legal data to be useful rather than dangerous, and what it means to build something that probably wouldn't exist if you didn't build it.

As a software engineer, he was used to Google having the answer to almost anything. So when he saw how hard it actually is for lawyers to access the law itself, he built laws.africa to fix it.
