I have read Portia Nelson’s poem so many times at the end of retreats because it is such a beautiful reminder that it is human to err and our failures are a path to insight. And one day I realized that this poem also does a great job describing burnout recovery. Having experienced burnout myself and working with many people dealing with it, I realized that people often try to start at chapter five. That is the part that never works. You cannot walk around a hole you have not yet learned to see, and you will probably not see it at the pace you are currently moving.
So here are four days in the Cederberg to slow down and reflect on the work you have been doing, and the holes you fall into along the way.
And just a reminder. We don’t do breakthroughs.
