We love it when the little ones visit the Clanwilliam Wildflower Show and we have decided to write a short story for them. George, the penguin, got lost. Follow his journey back home to the Strandveld over the following few days.

THE ADVENTURES OF GEORGE, THE PENGUIN

Chapter 2 - SUCCULENT KAROO

George the penguin was not having the best day, despite it being Spring Day. He found himself surrounded by towering aloes, prickly green monsters that looked like they might sq**rt aloe vera juice at any moment. The brave penguin shivered at the thought of being coated in slimy goo. "I just want to get back to the ocean," he sighed, imagining the cool waves calling his name.

As George tried to maneuver his flippers through the maze of vygies, he tripped and did a somersault, landing beak-first in the sand. A tiny lizard zipped out from behind an aloe, whispering, "Psst! Hey, penguin! You can do it! Just keep going!" George blinked in bewilderment. "Did that lizard just… encourage me?” he wondered. With newfound determination, George boldly declared, "I'm not scared. I'm power-waddling!"

With a mixture of gusto and flipper-flailing, George set off, bumping into aloes, apologizing profusely and barely avoiding more tumbles.

Chapter 3 - THE BIEDOUW VALLEY

George dreamed of nothing more than zooming back home to the splashy ocean to gobble up a delicious, wiggle-waggle pilchard and slurp some salty seawater. With eyes as droopy as wilting daisies, he waddled along. But then he saw something surprising in the field of pretty orange, white and blue flowers.

A friendly goat was munching on grass as if it was birthday cake! "You can do it, little penguin!" the goat bleated with a happy grin.

Feeling inspired, George thought, "Maybe I can eat these flowers like the goat!" So, he tried nibbling on a colourful petal. Yuck! Not nice!

Realizing flowers were not his cup of rooibos tea, George stuck to his plan and flapped his wings to head back to the ocean. He waddled away, imagining his fishy feast and leaving the flowers for his goat friend.
