A flash flood through Meiringspoort shut one of the Western Capeโ€™s most important inland routes, stranded travellers and forced emergency rescues.

Authorities say the key N12 pass between Beaufort West and Oudtshoorn has now reopened under caution, but only after heavy water flow, rockfall and road debris made conditions dangerous. Swartberg Pass remains closed, and motorists have been warned to travel carefully as clean-up continues.
