Along the tropical belt of KwaZulu-Natal, nestled amongst the palm and giant Milkwood trees lies Teremok Lodge & Spa, a luxurious five-star boutique hotel whose name translates from the Russian word for ‘little hideaway’. Prestigiously positioned on Marine Drive, just 1km from the ever-popular Umhlanga Rocks village, the über deluxe Teremok Lodge provides a serene, home-away-from-home experience for the most discerning of business executives and leisure travelers alike. Teremok was residence to the Vladykin family for many years having initially been built by Constantine Vladykin in 1968 as a two-bedroom holiday home. Known fondly as ‘Kotchka’, Vladykin had escaped the Russian Revolution with the help of the Red Cross and was educated at Cambourne School of Mines (UK) where he qualified as a mining surveyor. This brought him to South Africa where he married the daughter of a Belgian diamond cutter, and in time joined the family business. In 1966 Kotchka decided to retire to the coast where he had purchased land on Marine Drive and with the help of his good friend and architect, Steffan Ahrends (designer of ‘Milkwood’, the Oppenheimer family’s Umhlanga home), Teremok was created. Kotchka could never have imagined that years later, his beloved “little hideaway” would become one of KwaZulu-Natal’s finest boutique guest houses, but in 2002 the property finally came onto the market and was quickly snapped up by Debbie Davidson, who officially opened Teremok Lodge in December 2003. Due to Teremok’s truly colourful history, the new owners decided that the structure and feel should remain true to the essence of what was originally designed, built and joyously lived in for so many years. Teremok was purchased as a three-bedroom house and, while little was done to the exterior, the inside was given a complete overhaul. Original doors, sash windows and wooden flooring were left in place or reused elsewhere and the photos displayed around the house pay tribute to the Vladykin family. Every inch of Teremok clearly illustrates the meticulous attention to detail that has gone into creating the ultimate in luxury accommodation. A feast for the senses, all of the eight suites are unique in design, layout and feel with small subtleties such as individual scent and mood-music to create an enchanting atmosphere unlike any other. Each suite has extra-length beds (king size or twin), handcrafted ceiling fans, air-conditioning and private balconies. The open plan bathrooms have large rain-dance showers, freestanding baths, double basins and separate toilets with bidets. Extras include home entertainment systems, Bluetooth speakers, wireless charging pads, as well as complimentary fibre WiFi internet connection available throughout, and a library of well over 500 DVDs. Teremok also offers its guests a wide range of services and facilities, to help make their stay ultra-comfortable. Keeping with the home-away-from-home feel, two well positioned complimentary tea and coffee stations, as well as an honesty bar, help guests to feel relaxed in the lodge. Necessary measures have also been taken for guests to feel safe during their stay at Teremok, and there is secure off-road parking and an armed response unit in case of emergency. For guests who wish to enjoy the outdoors, they make use of the pool which is located in the lush, landscaped gardens prolific with bird life. The property also boasts the highly acclaimed Teremok Spa and, with full-time therapists on-hand seven days a week, guests are encouraged to indulge in one of the superb treatments on offer to immerse themselves in ‘the definitive experience’ that Teremok offers. Teremok Lodge also has an exclusive meeting room for clients wishing to conduct business meetings or hold a small function. Teremok Lodge also offers various meal options for lunch and dinner, including a gourmet picnic basket, as well as an occasion menu to enhance celebrations during guests’ stays.

UBUNTU 🇿🇦
/uːˈbʊntuː/
Ubuntu is a South African word meaning “humanity”, but is lived out as the philosophy of “I am, because we are”. Our population is referred to as the “Rainbow Nation”, as it is a veritable melting-pot of races, ethnicities, languages, cultures and religions, united to create a beautiful, harmonious and colourful nation that appeared in 1994 after the ‘rain’. Today we celebrate every colour and creed that makes up our glorious Rainbow Nation...🌈

This morning, Simphiwe and Ninette walked around our gardens with guests who showed a particular in the indigenous plants.

Amongst those that captivated them were a flowering Tall Natal form of Scadoxus puniceus - common names Paint Brush (English), Poeierkwas (Afrikaans) & Umphompho (Zulu).

It bears a large inflorescence of red, powder-puff-like flowers on a long stem from July to October. The bright-red berries are a beautiful feature of this plant and are much sought after by birds - Sunbirds and Weavers are known to feed on the nectar. The bulb is also extensively used as a medicinal plant.

The guests commented on how well maintained the gardens are, and how much love and care has clearly gone into them. For this we thank our team of Groundsmen who work tirelessly under Debbie’s guidance to maintain such well cared for gardens year-round.

Ninette, where do we start, but to say Thank You, Dankie, Siyabonga for choosing Teremok as your home (away from home) for the last 20 years! We so appreciate who you are, and what you have given of your time, energy, effort and yourself in your two decades with us. You have ridden the storm with us - there’s been fun & frustration, successes & set-backs , passion & panic along the way, but we’ve certainly created a lifetime of memories with you as an honourary part of our family.

Today we honour you, the work you do, your passion for and pride in Teremok, as well as the hospitality industry and our Rainbow Nation. You are one of the true blessings at Teremok - not only to us as owners, but for every guest that you’ve encountered over the last 20 years, helping make their stay a definitive experience. With love and gratitude... Debbie, Tracy & Kim

It is fate that brought us to Teremok, an expansive Umhlanga holiday home turned boutique lodge and spa. Over four decades, it had overflowed with three generations of the Vladykin family which began in pre-revolution Russia, included a lifelong fairy tale romance and, finally, came to rest with us – a mother and two daughters.

But it was serendipity, that marvelously unpredictable force, that allowed us to weave our own tale. Flippantly dubbed the Trilogy, we delighted in taking on the title as we are indeed three related but different creative works.

Our vision was to create a character-infused boutique lodge which met with all of our expectations of what we wanted when travelling. Teremok translates from Russian as “little hideaway” and this is integral to the brand’s ethos. The result is the ultimate urban cocoon that goes back to basics, offering an oasis of serenity in a caring and nurturing environment stripped of all window dressing. We implemented their belief that what were previously considered luxuries are now modern-day necessities.

The three things we identified as areas of focus when originally opening Teremok were attention to detail, to create a home away from home, and to offer service excellence. These still remain core features in our vision.

It was never our intention to offer anything over-the-top as this is not their style. Everything that guests want is here in an understated yet pre-emptive way. Teremok aspires to offer “the definitive experience” and the lodge has successfully gathered a group of evangelists rather than guests.

A women-strong management and ownership team with a service-driven, hands-on philosophy, ensures an organisation that is full of passion and drive to be the best. This inspiration is a unique and often elusive characteristic that separates the ordinary from the truly extraordinary.
