Mass Fish Kill. Great headline, thank you, , one of the 125,000 (and climbing) viewers of the Kayser's Connect post about the sardine washout in ZA. The comments too have raised a number of issues, not least: Where does the Pilchard Herpes Virus come from? Yhu! Where oh where? Among other concerns are the effect on sardine feeders, commercial handline fishing, and the trawlers said to be decimating fish stocks. What guarantee do we have that unscrupulous trawlers won't scoop up dead sardines floating in massive sea morgues said to be kilometres long?

I'm happy Kayser's Connect has helped to raise awareness of what is to date an unquantifiable destruction of an essential food source in the sea, and on land, pilchards an affordable protein for humans. * From Namibia on the West Coast to past Transkei on the East Coast, mass washouts only one indication of mortality. Enormous floating sardine graveyards, out at sea, were reported in the comments, plus there's the question of rotting sardines on the sea floor. Which means a double whammy for marine life: Food reduced, plus the decomposition. It culls oxygen.
* When millions of sardines die simultaneously—such as during a disease outbreak like the Pilchard Herpesvirus (PHV) or a sudden toxic algae bloom—the volume of organic material completely overwhelms local scavengers. This creates severe environmental issues on the seafloor, such as Deoxygenation (Dead Zones). Decomposing bacteria require oxygen to break down organic matter. When mountains of sardines decay at once, these bacteria multiply exponentially and strip the surrounding water of its oxygen. This creates localised "anoxic zones" where resident bottom-dwelling fish, crabs, and shellfish suffocate and die.
* Toxic Gas Build-Up: When oxygen is completely depleted, anaerobic bacteria (bacteria that don't need oxygen) take over the decomposition process. They release massive amounts of hydrogen sulfide (which smells like rotten eggs) and methane gas into the seabed sediment.
Eruptive Gas Blowouts: In extreme scenarios, changes in coastal weather or ocean pressure can cause these trapped toxic gases to erupt from the seafloor. When the hydrogen sulfide reaches the upper layers of the ocean, it reacts with oxygen, turning the sea water a milky-white or green colour and causing massive secondary fish kills. Yhu. Yhu! Nearly forgot. Duif2, ou Mike. Talking pigeons. Friday first time I saw his birds circling. 🐦 And plunging onto his roof. "I've only got five," he said, over the fence. But he had more, back in the day.
"Ja, I used to race," he said.
Like Duif1 does now, ou Josef, with his big lofts, and breeding, and racing. And auctioning. Ja. They bid for birds.

Anyway, you learn something every day, not least how knowledge is passed from veteran fanciers to the juniors, a tight-knit group of people with expert knowledge on, eg, the right medicines for sick birds.
"When I was a laaitie I'd also ask the older guys," Mike said.
* He also pointed out how technology has changed pigeon racing. Everything was clocked by hand after a race. And then recorded on paper. Now, when the birds fly in, the results are automated.
* But, the basics stay the same. "There are two things," he said. "Clean food. Clean water." And, I guess, a loft to call home.

Tks for the weather in pictures, and everything. Here, in Bundu Beach Kay Bay A. Wendy recorded 2.5mm Sat at 8am. Not much but gardens good for planting, after the week's soaking. Fortunately, sun's peeping out but it's nippy. Max 19degC Sat and Sun. Min 16degC.
Temp starts rising Mon to forecast high on Weds. 24degC. Min temps for week 18degC. Rain 🌧 next weekend. 50% Sat, 80% Sun.

The swallows are back, Andile told Kayser's Connect. "Those birds 🐦 that build the nests of mud are busy at Madala's place." Last week he pointed out a smelly co**se across the road, once a little black and white dog. "Probably a snake bit it," he said. And. One day he gave me a bank card he'd found near the shop. But I never found out who it belonged to.
* Saw reams and reams of bluebottles on Shelber's beach, after dodging whiff from . They'd washed up into long undulating ribbons along the shore. Each wave leaving its unique trail. Cluttered with bluebottles, like I've not seen before. Some of them huge. They made a big bang when I stamped on one or two of them. You know, the kind of thing you do as a child. The sound echoed. The dogs jumped and a long blue tail stuck to my heel. Fortunately, no sting. "The east wind brings them," the Greybeard said.
* Plus. First time ever, picked up a bouy. There were also two little bags of chicken on the sand. Arabic writing on them. What's for supper? Haha.
