NOTICE TO RESIDENTS | INSECT OUTBREAK

The Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality is aware of the recent reports of an increased presence of insects concentrated in the KuGompo area, with similar reports now emerging from Mdantsane.

We acknowledge the concerns being raised by residents as we are receiving a significant number of enquiries regarding the situation.

We urge residents to remain calm while the Municipality, together with relevant authorities, conducts further investigations to establish the exact nature and cause of the outbreak.

At this stage, it would be premature to speculate on the cause. Possible factors may include seasonal changes, higher temperatures and other environmental conditions, but this has not yet been confirmed.

The Municipality has convened an urgent meeting involving officials from the environmental health, environmental management and communications sectors.

It has been resolved that the Municipality will urgently engage relevant provincial and national authorities, including the Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEDEAT), the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), and the Department of Agriculture, to assist with identifying the insect species and determining the appropriate response.

Residents will be kept informed as soon as verified information becomes available, through the Municipality's official communication platforms.

Should the investigation establish that the infestation falls within the Municipality's mandate and requires municipal intervention, the necessary measures will be implemented.

At this stage, no fumigation will be undertaken in municipal offices or other areas until the insect species has been positively identified and its habitat, behaviour and susceptibility to insecticides have been established.

This precautionary approach is intended to ensure that any intervention undertaken is safe, appropriate and effective.

We thank residents for their patience and cooperation while the relevant authorities work urgently to establish the facts and determine the appropriate course of action.

Residents are encouraged to rely on verified information from the Municipality and to avoid spreading unconfirmed information or speculation.
