Old Mill Drift Guest Farm

Old Mill Drift Guest Farm Discover Old Mill Drift: Historic guest farm on the Caledon River, a hidden gem for adventure & peace

“The Free State landscape gladdens my heart, no matter what my mood. When I am here I feel that nothing can shut me in; that my thoughts can roam as far as the horizons.” - Nelson Mandela

Nestled between the majestic Maluti Mountains, embraced by nothing but panoramic views of peaceful horizons, the crystal-clear waters of the Caledon River, and the swaying grasslands of the Eastern Free State H

ighlands, lies the Old Mill Drift Guest Farm. Gifted to Colonel Hull by Queen Elizabeth II, for his bravery in the Boer War, steeped in history, this masterpiece of Mother Nature has been the canvas for many guests to create unforgettable memories. Some of the farm’s historical buildings were transformed into chalets that today offer visitors the comforts of modern living, without sacrificing the charm of yesteryear. Carved from the same sandstone that gave birth to the towering mountains of the Kingdom of Lesotho, the chalets are in perfect harmony with its spectacular surroundings. The farm’s fruitful landscape is enclosed in parts by forest and saturated with three natural springs, three dams (summer season only), a few small waterfalls, and various natural pools that will soak the soul of any wary traveller. So if you’re seeking a peace and quiet that only the beauty of nature and the nostalgia of history can instil, look no further than Old Mill Drift Guest Farm.

Experience the Lion’s Gate Portal at Old Mill Drift
26 July – 12 August 2025

Did you know that Old Mill Drift is on an ancient energy portal? Over the years, several spiritually aware visitors and wellness practitioners have described the land here as a place of heightened energy and deep tranquility, ideal for connection, reflection, prayer, and personal renewal.

One of the most significant alignments of the year, known as the Lion’s Gate Portal, occurs between 26 July and 12 August, peaking on 8 August. This period marks a rare astronomical alignment between the Earth, the star Sirius, and the constellation of Leo, a passage of time traditionally associated with clarity, courage, and new beginnings.

Whether you approach this season from a place of faith, self-reflection, or curiosity, Old Mill Drift offers a sacred space to pause and connect – with nature, with yourself, and with something greater.

Book your stay during the Lion’s Gate Portal to experience this unique and powerful time in a setting that many describe as deeply restorative and spiritually alive.
