The Story of Franschhoek🦉

Franschhoek, meaning “French Corner,” is a town in the Western Cape. It was founded by French Huguenot refugees who settled in the valley at the end of the 17th century after fleeing religious persecution in France.

After the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, many Protestants were forced to leave France. About 200 Huguenots arrived at the Cape between 1688 and 1689 under the Dutch East India Company, which granted them land in a valley known then as Olifantshoek due to the presence of elephants in the area.

The VOC distributed farms to the new arrivals, including La Motte, Cabrière, Chamonix, La Dauphine, L’Ormarins, and La Provence, many of which still bear their original names. Although the settlers were French, they were required to integrate into Dutch colonial society. Within two generations, the French language largely disappeared, replaced by Dutch.

The Huguenots brought viticultural skills and helped establish early wine farming in the Cape. However, wine cultivation in the area was modest at first because of isolation and poor transport routes. The region remained primarily agricultural, producing fruit, wheat, and livestock.

A Dutch Reformed Church congregation was established in 1845, marking the growth of a permanent town. The settlement developed slowly, with most residents engaged in farming. The construction of a railway branch line from Paarl to Franschhoek in 1904 improved access and trade, linking the valley more closely to Cape Town and the surrounding districts.

In 1948, the Huguenot Monument was erected at the end of the main street to commemorate the Huguenot settlers and their contribution to the Cape. The adjoining Huguenot Memorial Museum, opened in 1967, preserves records, artifacts, and genealogies related to the French settlers and their descendants.

Today, Franschhoek retains much of its historical layout. Many original farmsteads and Cape Dutch homesteads from the 18th and 19th centuries survive.
