Saturday we will bid farewell to a remarkable lady, Beatrice Elizabeth Ballot ~ our beloved Tannie Beatie.
Born on 12 September 1923, she lived an extraordinary life spanning more than a century, earning her wings at the remarkable age of 102, just shy of her 103rd birthday.
Many of us in Herolds Bay will forever remember Tannie Beatie from Moederskoen, just two houses down from “Los My Uit” and now “Oupa se Pitte”. Our families’ stories have been woven together through generations, connected by a thread that can never be broken.
In the early years, she was the trusted person who assisted with the holiday rentals of our family home, and her kindness, reliability, and strong sense of responsibility left a lasting impression on all who knew her.
We will remember her as a stern woman who did not take nonsense from anyone. She knew exactly how things should be done and was never afraid to say so. Yet behind that firm exterior was a deep love for her family and those around her.
And who could ever forget the ringing of the bell that called everyone home from the beach at lunchtime? No matter what you were doing, when that bell rang, it was time to drop everything and rush back to take your place around the lunch table. It is one of those treasured memories that will forever be part of the fabric of Herolds Bay and the Ballot family legacy.
Born a Botha, she later became a Ballot, and in one of life’s most beautiful chapters, found love again later in life and became a Hicks ~ a reminder that love can find us at any age.
Our hearts go out to her family and loved ones during this time of farewell. As she is laid to rest, we celebrate a life exceptionally well lived ~ a life filled with family, friendship, resilience, love, and countless cherished memories.
Rest peacefully, dear Tannie Beatie. Thank you for the memories, the laughter, and the traditions. Your legacy lives on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing you.
