We absolutely love witnessing our guests embrace these moments and the Buchanan family recently did just that! With a special birthday celebration in the mix, Mum Imogen was in for a day to remember. 🎉🎣

Not only was she celebrating her birthday, but she also caught her very first fish and what a catch it was too....an impressive Tiger Fish, caught right here on Lake Jozini with her family, where they enjoyed a thrilling day filled with laughter, excitement, and several successful catches.

Calling all bird enthusiasts! 🐦

🦅Shayamoya is set on a ridge in pristine African wilderness, making it a rich birding destination with around 400 species. From the central lodge's wooden deck, enjoy breathtaking views of Lake Jozini, the Pongola River, and the Lebombo Mountains. You may spot soaring raptors like the Martial and Wahlberg's Eagles, as well as various vultures.

🦜The lodge's indigenous gardens attract numerous species, especially in winter when aloes and succulents bloom. Look for Scarlet-chested and White-bellied Sunbirds, Red-headed Weavers, and possibly the elusive Red-billed Helmetshrike. A daily sighting of the rare crowned Guinea Fowl and a pair of Purple-Crested Turaco adds to the experience.

🐦‍⬛Shayamoya offers unique activities in the Pongola Nature Reserve, featuring diverse ecosystems and abundant wildlife. Birding habitats include:

🪵Woodlands and Savanna - Burchell's Starling, Rudd's Apalis, and Bateleur.

🌲Riverine Forest/Woodland - Heuglin's Robin, Pygmy Kingfisher, and Giant Eagle Owl.

🌾Grasslands - Kurrichane Buttonquail, Lilac-breasted Roller, and Grass Owl.

Who ever said fishing was a boys sport ...clearly had not met this fabulous family all the way from Canada!

Their two lovely daughters and brother Eddie could not get enough of their Tiger fishing expedition on magnificent Lake Jozini and between them, with the help of our guide Innocent, managed to catch 5 beauties during just one morning!

Thanks to Tour Guide Anton Robert's from African wanderer tours for bringing us these special guests, they truly had a whale of a time!

Today, we celebrate the incredible diversity of wildlife that shares our planet and recognize the vital role they play in maintaining a healthy environment. This year's theme highlights the amazing benefits of medicinal and aromatic plants....nature's own pharmacies showcasing their positive impact on ecosystems, health, and well-being.

Here at Shayamoya we are proud to support and protect the natural habitats that nourish these incredible plants and the wildlife that depends on them. Nestled within the diverse flora that surrounds the lodge, we are blessed to have several incredible examples of medicinal plants, native to Southern Africa.

🌿 Heartfelt Farewell and Exciting New Beginnings at Shayamoya ......

After over 13.5 wonderful years, our beloved Miriam is returning to Zimbabwe to pursue her dream of becoming a teacher. Miriam has been more than just a staff member; she has been a trusted friend and part of our Shayamoya family. From initially being employed to help with my children on Jared’s 9th birthday, (He is now 22!) to becoming a dedicated receptionist, masseur, and a source of warmth and kindness to all our guests, Miriam’s heartfelt presence will be dearly missed. We are incredibly proud of her for taking this next step in her journey and wish her all the success and happiness in her new adventure.

As Miriam departs, we are pleased to announce that Fikile Mthethwa has been promoted to take over her role in the office. Fikile has been a valued member of our team, and her efficiency and warm personality make her the perfect fit for this position. We are also excited to welcome Sphelele Biyela, who will be joining us in Fikile’s old role, rotating through bar, office, and hosting duties. Sphelele has already shown herself to be a quick learner, and we look forward to seeing her flourish at Shayamoya.

While we say goodbye to Miriam with heartfelt gratitude and best wishes, we are also embracing these changes as a chance to grow and strengthen our team. We wish Miriam all the best as she embarks on her new path, and we look forward to supporting Fikile and Sphelele in their new roles. Thank you to everyone for your continued support too.... we are excited for what the future holds for Shayamoya!
