Gourikwa Nature Reserve

Gourikwa Nature Reserve A pristine coastal reserve on the Garden Route, offering nature-inspired stays and immersive fynbos and shoreline experiences.
(1)

Gourikwa Reserve is one of the most unique private reserves along the South African coastline. With 5km of pristine coastline, a rich variety of indigenous fauna and flora and facilities ranging from top class accommodation to a beachfront chapel and a state of the art wedding facility. Previously known as Reins Reserve, we have reverted to the original “Gourikwa” and have made major upgrades to t

he reserve. Located in the heart of the scenic Garden Route, the 2000ha reserve is nestled between Mosselbay and Stillbay and is only a 50 min drive away from the George Airport. This is truly a gem in the Garden Route crown.

The Cape Mountain Zebra (Equus zebra zebra) tells one of South Africa’s most remarkable conservation comeback stories. Once reduced to roughly 90 animals in the 1950s, the population has recovered to more than 4,800 individuals through the combined efforts of conservation authorities, national parks and private landowners. At Gourikwa, this story continues: Cape Mountain Zebra have been reintroduced to the reserve as a species of conservation concern, returning an indigenous large mammal to the Southern Cape landscape. Today they roam across Gourikwa’s 2,455-hectare protected reserve, where fynbos stretches towards a rugged Indian Ocean coastline — an especially striking setting for an animal usually associated with mountainous landscapes. Every animal is also individually recognisable by its unique stripe pattern, making each zebra quite literally one of a kind.

As World Water Week comes to an end, it is a reminder that every drop matters. 💧🌿

In the Western Cape, water is a precious and often scarce resource — and protecting it starts with how we use, treat and return it to the environment.

At Gourikwa Coastal Nature Reserve, sustainability is part of our everyday thinking. Our wastewater treatment system allows water to be responsibly treated and managed, helping us reduce pressure on natural resources while protecting the sensitive coastal landscape around us.

Because conservation is not only about protecting wildlife and fynbos — it is also about protecting the water that sustains them.

Use water wisely. Protect it fiercely. Every drop has a future.
