The Grahamstown Hospitality Guild (GHG) represents many of the B&B's, self-catering establishments, guest houses, game reserves, lodges, farms and home stays in Grahamstown and the surrounding areas. All accommodation establishments registered with the GHG are graded annually, either by the GHG (pineapple grading) or by a National Grading Authority, e.g
. Tourism Grading Council of SA., to ensure that high standards of accommodation are maintained according to the establishments' grading status. Known as "Africa's Festival Capital", Grahamstown is host to a number of Festivals including the National Arts Festival, Scifest, Grahamstown Flower Festival and Schools Festivals, as well as numerous conferences and courses throughout the year. Grahamstown is home to Rhodes University, the High Court and some of the finest schools and educational institutions in the country. Undoubtedly the heartbeat of the Eastern Cape with its rich African and English Settler history, magnificent architecture and beautiful tree-lined streets, Grahamstown offers a variety of places of interest to visit as well as activities for visitors, and is the perfect stop-over for the weary traveller. Surrounded by a number of beautiful day trip destinations, one can visit the seaside towns of Kenton-on-Sea (52 km), Port Alfred (54 km) and Bushman's River Mouth (53 km) and enjoy their pristine beaches, or the arts and crafts hub of Bathurst (40 km) which is the centre of the pineapple industry. Travel inland to Addo (97 km), Riebeek East (44 km), Bedford (95 km), Adelaide (82 km) and Hogsback (102 km), or visit one of the many malaria-free game reserves on Grahamstown's doorstep.
