We are so chuffed, excited and ever thankful for having been declared a NATURE RESERVE... Officially we are now EVERGREEN RIVER NATURE RESERVE.
So, what is a Nature Reserve?
A nature reserve is a protected area that is formally declared to conserve biodiversity, ecosystems, and natural landscapes. These reserves are established under the National Environmental Management: Protected Areas Act (often called NEMPAA), which provides the legal framework for different categories of protected areas.
It is an area set aside to protect plants, animals, ecosystems, or geological features and can be owned
by the state, communities, or private individuals and it is managed according to strict conservation principles.
There are public nature reserves (e.g., provincial parks) and private nature reserves (owned by individuals or companies but legally protected).
Responsibilities of Private Landowners After Declaration:
If a private farm is legally declared a nature reserve under NEMPAA,(this being applicable to us as owners of a private farm) the landowner retains ownership but must comply with several legal and environmental responsibilities:
1. Conservation Management
Protect and maintain the natural biodiversity of the land
Prevent activities that could harm ecosystems (e.g., overgrazing, habitat destruction)
Control invasive species
2. Management Plan
Develop and implement an approved management plan
This plan outlines conservation goals, land use, wildlife management, and monitoring
3. Restrictions on Land Use
Farming, development, or mining activities are restricted or regulated
Any major changes require approval from environmental authorities
4. Biodiversity Protection
Protect endangered species and sensitive habitats
Avoid illegal hunting, logging, or resource extraction
5. Compliance and Monitoring
Allow inspections by environmental authorities
Submit reports if required by the relevant provincial conservation agency
Thank you.
Evergreen greetings
