A muddy masterpiece. 🦏

There’s something special about watching a rhino enjoy a mud wallow. More than just a way to cool down, mud helps protect their skin from the African sun and keeps irritating insects at bay.

Powerful yet peaceful, these iconic giants remind us that some of the most memorable safari moments are found in simply observing nature at work.

A rare sighting and one of Africa’s toughest little animals! 🦡

Spotted on a recent afternoon game drive, this honey badger gave us an unusually clear view before continuing on its way. Known for their fearless nature, honey badgers have earned a reputation that far exceeds their size.

In fact, many guides joke that they’d rather face a lion or leopard than an angry honey badger! Their determination, aggression, and complete lack of intimidation have made them legendary throughout the African bush.

Considering how elusive these animals are, and the quality of the sighting we enjoyed, this was a truly special moment to witness on Game Drive.

This morning’s game drive delivered a sighting to remember. 🐆

We spent time with three cheetahs as they moved through the bushveld, alert and focused on their surroundings. Seeing these graceful predators up close is always a privilege, and watching them navigate their territory was a special experience for everyone on board.

Encounters like this are what make every drive at Umkumbe unique, no two mornings are ever the same.

This morning’s drive turned into one of the most extraordinary wildlife encounters we’ve experienced.🦁

From early on, the bush was alive with tension as the distant roaring of rival lion coalitions carried through the area. What followed unfolded in real time across the landscape surrounding the lodge. An intense territorial battle between the Gijima males and three of the N’waswitshaka males.

While our guides were out on drive following the action as it developed, the drama escalated. The lions moved back and forth through the area, even passing close by, as they chased and challenged each other in a powerful display of dominance.

From the treehouse deck, even some of our general staff had a front-row seat to the unfolding chaos, watching in disbelief and excitement as the conflict surged up and down the landscape in front of our lodge. The roaring, the movement, and the tension built an atmosphere unlike anything we’ve experienced before.

Eventually, after an unforgettable back-and-forth, the Gijima males pushed the challengers westward, claiming victory on this occasion.

For some of our guides with over 10 years of experience in the bush, this was described as one of the most thrilling and intense lion encounters they’ve ever witnessed — a true reminder of the raw power and unpredictability of the wild.🤩

WOW review🤩

“Super Lodge in Sabi Sands

The lodge was easy to reach as a self-driver thanks to the descriptions on the website. During our stay (4 days), we felt very warmly welcomed by the friendly staff.

Our tent (Buffallothorn) was very large and beautifully designed. Because of the location, we didn’t notice anything about the other guests. The fact that there was a small outdoor gym was definitely a plus, as the food was also very good and plentiful. 😁

The highlight was of course the daily game drives, where our guide Steven actually allowed us to see all of the Big 5.

For us, Umkumbe was the perfect lodge and we would come back again in a heartbeat!”

Led by our experienced armed trails guides, a bushwalk is all about seeing the bush from a completely different perspective. Without the engine of a vehicle, you begin to notice the smaller details you might normally miss — animal tracks in the sand, the calls of birds, medicinal plants, insects, and the incredible interconnectedness of the ecosystem around you.

It’s not just about spotting wildlife (although you might get lucky 👀), it’s about understanding the stories the bush is constantly telling.

Every step is safe, educational, and deeply immersive — a reminder that we are visitors in a living, breathing wilderness.
