Keep your eyes open for the little things and you too could strike gold in Marloth Park! HR Ria Fisher spotted this remarkable Fool’s Gold Tortoise Beetle this week: probably 𝘈𝘴𝘱𝘪𝘥𝘰𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘱𝘩𝘢 𝘲𝘶𝘢𝘥𝘳𝘪𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘪𝘴.

𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗵𝗼𝘄𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁𝘄𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗮𝘆!?

What is surprising about the life-cycle of the family this moth belongs to: 𝘚𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘪𝘥𝘢𝘦?

This richly-coloured Lunar prince, 𝘊𝘢𝘮𝘱𝘪𝘮𝘰𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘭𝘶𝘮 𝘬𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘻𝘦𝘪 (was 𝘎𝘰𝘰𝘥𝘪𝘢 𝘬𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘻𝘦𝘪), was photographed by HR Frikkie Pretorius in Volstruis this week. By the time you read this it will likely be dead. Many of the biggest and most colourful moths belong to this family. Amazingly, they emerge, find a mate, females lay eggs, then both die within a week, never eating! They have vestigial mouth parts, and use energy stored from their larval stage.
(𝘚𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘪𝘥𝘢𝘦 are not the only family that do this. )
