This richly-coloured Lunar prince, ๐˜Š๐˜ข๐˜ฎ๐˜ฑ๐˜ช๐˜ฎ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฑ๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ถ๐˜ฎ ๐˜ฌ๐˜ถ๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ป๐˜ฆ๐˜ช (was ๐˜Ž๐˜ฐ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฅ๐˜ช๐˜ข ๐˜ฌ๐˜ถ๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ป๐˜ฆ๐˜ช), was photographed by HR Frikkie Pretorius in Volstruis this week. By the time you read this it will likely be dead. Many of the biggest and most colourful moths belong to this family. Amazingly, they emerge, find a mate, females lay eggs, then both die within a week, never eating! They have vestigial mouth parts, and use energy stored from their larval stage.
