As August comes to a close, here's a look back at the month through our lens: golden sunsets, giraffe moving through the fynbos, a lion at rest, zebra grazing in the last light, the first blooms of spring, and a landscape that's visibly waking up.

This is what a season of renewal actually looks like, not one dramatic before-and-after, but small, specific moments adding up across the whole month.

Buffalo don't usually give you much drama. Most of the time they're calm, moving through as a herd without much excitement, which is exactly what made watching these two cows spar for a full 30 minutes so unusual.

It looks like play, and in a sense it is, but it's more calculated than that. Cape buffalo herds run on a strict hierarchy, and the older, dominant females act as "pathfinders," leading the herd to food and water. Sparring like this lets females test each other's strength and settle their ranking safely, without the injuries a real contest would cause. The dung pile itself is part of the draw: buffalo use fresh dung to scent-mark, and wallowing in it helps cool them down in the heat and suffocates ticks and other parasites, which is likely part of why several animals end up crowding around the same spot.

Thirty minutes of behaviour most guests never get to see. A genuine privilege to witness.

If you've been to Gondwana before, you'll recognise this immediately: a fire cracking nearby, platannas and reed frogs calling from every direction as the evenings warm, an African nightjar somewhere off in the distance, and underneath it all, a sound that's become unmistakably Gondwana's own.

The season is turning at Gondwana. The air still carries winter's crispness, but warm pockets are creeping in between, and out on a game drive, it shows: small spots of colour catching your eye against the fynbos, flowers that have been waiting all winter to open.

Two young bull elephants sparring, testing each other, escalating, until an older bull arrives on the scene. He makes no charge, no display, he doesn't need one. The youngsters step down immediately, and calm returns just as fast as it left.

This isn't just a nice moment, it's a real and important part of elephant society. Older bulls play a critical social role for younger males, teaching restraint simply through their presence. Where older bulls have been removed from elephant populations elsewhere in Africa, research has shown young males become measurably more aggressive and destructive without that guidance. Every older bull here at Gondwana, the southernmost free-roaming elephants in the Western Cape, is quietly doing work that the whole social structure depends on.

A RARE STILL MOMENT
In slow motion, to a constant chorus of sunbirds calling through the fynbos: she approaches, they greet each other, he rolls onto his back, then they walk off together, him playfully tapping her ankle along the way. A side of lions most people never see.
A privilege to witness. A lion doesn't bring stillness to the fynbos, it brings balance, and a pride playful and bonded enough to trust each other this completely is exactly how that balance holds.

Captured in slow motion, with sunbirds calling nonstop through the surrounding fynbos: a lioness approaches, the two greet each other, he rolls onto his back entirely at ease, and then they walk off together, him playfully tapping her ankle as they go, a side of lions most people never associate with an apex predator.

A lion doesn't bring stillness to an ecosystem, it brings balance. Moments like this, playful, bonded, a pride that trusts each other completely, are part of how that balance actually holds together. As an apex predator, their presence regulates everything below them: prey populations, vegetation, the whole structure of the fynbos depends on lions functioning as a pride, not just individuals.

That balance almost didn't exist at Gondwana. Lions are classified as vulnerable across Africa, and this pride was reintroduced as part of our rewilding programme, requiring real, ongoing management to maintain a genetically healthy, free-roaming population.

The fynbos rarely gets the credit it deserves. It survives wildfire, some species only germinate because of it, thrives in soil most plants couldn't, and quietly supports an entire ecosystem: birds, insects, and countless other species that depend on it completely.

It's resilient on the outside, and just as beautiful all the way through, a small, magical kind of strength, easy to miss unless you look closely. Happy National Women's Day to every woman carrying that same quiet magic.

Our camera traps run day and night, and what they catch is a side of Gondwana most guests never see: caracal, honey badgers, jackals, a baboon family passing through, elephants moving through the rain, antelope, hippo, and giraffe, all on their own daily and monthly routines, whether a game drive is passing by or not.

Every clip feeds into the same ongoing work behind our species counts and annual census, real evidence of how this land is actually being used by the animals that call it home. Some nights, you can hear their footsteps. In one clip, you can hear the rain falling around the elephants as they move past, and even the low rumble of their stomachs as they communicate with each other.
