🌸 Happy First Day of Spring! 🌸

Today we're celebrating the season of renewal with a special sighting — a graceful African Spoonbill foraging in the shallows of False Bay Park, Lake St. Lucia, just minutes from Leopard Walk Lodge.

With its distinctive spoon-shaped bill, this striking bird sweeps side to side through the water to catch small fish and aquatic insects. It's the kind of encounter our guests get to enjoy often — more than 400 bird species frequent our nature reserve and the surrounding iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Every visit here brings the promise of discovery, from dazzling waterbirds to rare forest specialists — a true paradise for bird lovers.

Just a young impala taking a moment to tidy up 🦌

Grooming isn't just about looking good — for impala, it helps keep their coat waterproof, removes ticks and parasites, and even helps regulate body temperature in the heat. For the younger ones, it's also a skill they're still perfecting, one wobbly stretch at a time.

It's the small, quiet moments like this — not just the Big 5 — that make time in the bush so special.

Ever wondered why zebras stand back to back like this? 🦓🦓

It's not just for show — standing tail-to-tail lets each zebra watch a different direction, so between the two of them almost nothing can sneak up unnoticed. Built-in 360° lookout.

And that nibbling you see them doing on each other's backs? That's called allogrooming — zebras use it to remove pesky insects, soothe itchy spots, and strengthen social bonds within the herd. It's basically how zebras say "I've got your back" (literally).

Little moments like this are why a game drive never gets old — there's always something new to notice.

🐦💦 Bath time at Leopard Walk!

Our water trough had two happy visitors this week – a Sombre Greenbul and a Red-capped Robin-Chat, both taking full advantage of a good splash and scrub. Simple pleasures in the Sand Forest!

It's these small, unscripted moments that remind us why we love this place so much. Keep an eye on our feed for more sightings from around the lodge. 🌿

🖤 Punk rockers of the bush 🖤

Spotted at the water trough this week — a flock of crested guineafowl, easy to recognise by that wild, curly black "mohawk" on top of their heads! Unlike their helmeted cousins, these guys skip the bony headgear and go straight for the rockstar look.

Crested guineafowl are true forest dwellers, right at home in the dense coastal bush of iSimangaliso, and they move in noisy, tight-knit flocks — you'll often hear their sharp calls through the undergrowth before you ever see them. Catching a whole group lined up for a drink is a great reminder of just how much life moves through Leopard Walk when you're not looking.

Keep your eyes (and ears) open around the lodge — these punk-haired locals are closer than you think! 🦃💧

🌙 Night visitors at Leopard Walk 🌙

Our bushcam near one of the rooms caught something special — a rusty-spotted genet paying multiple visits to the water trough after dark! This shy, secretive little predator slipped in for a drink, its huge eyes catching the infrared glow before vanishing back into the bush.

Genets are rarely seen by guests since they're almost entirely nocturnal, but that's the magic of a bushcam — it lets us peek into the after-hours world that goes on right outside your door while you sleep. Long body, ringed tail, leopard-like spots... they really do look like a cross between a cat and a mongoose!

Just another reminder that even when the lights go out at Leopard Walk, the wilderness never sleeps. 🐾
