Heritage Day is Thursday. Take the Friday.

Four days is just about perfect for Zululand. Enough time for a morning in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi, a day out at iSimangaliso, and — most importantly — at least one afternoon where you do absolutely nothing.

That last part is what guests tell us they didn't expect. It's genuinely quiet out here. No traffic, no neighbours, just the bush.

Things our guests actually say when they arrive:

"I didn't expect it to be this quiet."

That's the one we hear most. People come for the game reserves — and they should, they're world class — but the thing they mention on the way out is how still it is here. No traffic. No neighbours. Just the bush doing its thing in the background.

The rarest thing you'll see here isn't a Big Five animal.

It's about 35cm at the shoulder, weighs less than your dog, and will vanish before you've got your camera up.

The suni is one of Africa's smallest antelope, and it lives almost nowhere — it needs Sand Forest, and Sand Forest itself is one of the most restricted habitats on the continent. A thin ribbon of it running through this corner of Maputaland, and not much else anywhere in the world.

We have a patch of it right here. It's why the lodge sits where it sits.

Nobody tells you about the sound.

Guests arrive expecting the big stuff — the lions, the elephants, the sightings they came for. And they get it.

But the thing they mention when they leave is almost always the sound. The nightjars starting up at dusk. The bush turning over in the dark. Waking at five because a francolin decided it was time.

The bush is waking up.

September in Hluhluwe is the in-between season — the last of the dry days, the first of the heat, and the Sand Forest going green almost overnight. It's the week the migrant birds start arriving back and the reserve fills with new life.

It's also the quietest time to be here. Fewer vehicles at the sightings. Impala lambs everywhere. Long golden afternoons on the deck with nothing to do but watch.

Seven suites. One family. A patch of ancient Sand Forest on the edge of iSimangaliso.

🌸 Happy First Day of Spring! 🌸

Today we're celebrating the season of renewal with a special sighting — a graceful African Spoonbill foraging in the shallows of False Bay Park, Lake St. Lucia, just minutes from Leopard Walk Lodge.

With its distinctive spoon-shaped bill, this striking bird sweeps side to side through the water to catch small fish and aquatic insects. It's the kind of encounter our guests get to enjoy often — more than 400 bird species frequent our nature reserve and the surrounding iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Every visit here brings the promise of discovery, from dazzling waterbirds to rare forest specialists — a true paradise for bird lovers.

Just a young impala taking a moment to tidy up 🦌

Grooming isn't just about looking good — for impala, it helps keep their coat waterproof, removes ticks and parasites, and even helps regulate body temperature in the heat. For the younger ones, it's also a skill they're still perfecting, one wobbly stretch at a time.

It's the small, quiet moments like this — not just the Big 5 — that make time in the bush so special.
