After weeks of good summer rains, Zululand Lodge is looking beautifully green — and our zebra foals are thriving right along with it!
The little ones, once wobbly-legged and shy, are now confidently keeping up with the herd. Their stripes are sharpening, their playful energy is nonstop, and it’s been a joy watching them grow stronger each day against the backdrop of a revived bushveld.
There’s something special about seeing young wildlife flourish in a healthy landscape… it reminds us how alive this place really is.

This morning on the Msinene River delivered one of those perfect bushveld moments…
A tiny flash of electric blue and sunset-orange - the Malachite Kingfisher (alcedo cristata) - a jewel of bright colours.

At just 13cm tall, it’s one of Africa’s most dazzling birds, and here at Zululand Lodge it’s a regular visitor along the calm stretches of the river. Watching it hover, dive, and return with a silver fish in its beak is pure magic for anyone who loves birding or wildlife photography.

Meet the youngest lady of our giraffe herd at Zululand Lodge! 🦒 This curious young female has quickly captured our hearts with her graceful movements and wide-eyed wonder. She's already showing signs of a bold and inquisitive spirit.
On one of our guided bushwalks, you might be lucky enough to spot her exploring the acacia thickets or watching you from a distance. These gentle encounters on foot offer a magical and humbling experience with nature.

Check out this clear giraffe track we found during a recent morning bush walk at Zululand Lodge. The deep impression in the dry mud shows just how large and heavy these gentle giants are—some tracks measure up to 30 cm long! It’s always a thrill to follow their path through the bush.

Mid summer and the bush is invigorated by recent rains. The birdlife is astonishing. This inquisitive Purple-crested Turaco stopped briefly to look at us before continuing off to forage in the tree canopy.
