KNOW the Zulu Nyala ANIMALS!
Warthog - intibane/indlovudawana (Zulu)

- Despite their formidable appearance, warthogs exhibit intriguing behavior, often adopting a unique grazing stance, kneeling on their front knees. Surprisingly, these stocky creatures can reach speeds of up to 50 km/h / 30 mph when escaping danger, sprinting with their tails held upright like little flags or antennae. Furthermore, they reverse into burrows to face potential threats head-on. Beneath their rugged exterior, warthogs possess intelligence, social skills, and distinct personalities.

The Common Warthog, found in the Zulu Nyala region, boasts remarkable adaptations, including curved tusks that serve multiple purposes, such as digging, defense, and combat. Warthogs have a gestation period of approximately 5-6 months, typically giving birth to 2-4 piglets in a burrow. Female-led family groups, known as sounders, are accompanied by their young, while adult males often live solitarily or in loose bachelor groups.

A TRULY LIFE-CHANGING SAFARI EXPERIENCE

When my friend and I bid on this safari, I really didn’t know what to expect. In the lead-up to this trip, I was so burnt out and overwhelmed with work that I never had the opportunity to read reviews or research the experience in advance. As a result, I arrived with essentially no expectations, just the hope of disconnecting, experiencing nature, and relaxing.

What I left with was a truly life-changing experience.

We were placed in a group with absolutely phenomenal people, and the energy within the group was incredible. Over the course of the trip we formed genuine friendships and bonds that I know will last long after we all returned home. I could never have imagined just how meaningful and beautiful this experience would be, and I am truly grateful to Zulu Nyala for creating the space and structure that allowed it to happen.

If you are considering a safari at Zulu Nyala, this experience exceeded every expectation I had for a South African safari.

✔️ Resort Property:
Absolutely beautiful. I loved walking the property and exploring the different areas to sit, relax, and take in the surroundings. The grounds are peaceful and well maintained, and it was a pleasure simply spending time there between activities.
✔️ Accommodations:
My friend and I stayed in a standard room. It was clean, spacious, comfortable, and had everything we needed for the week.
✔️ Safari Reserve:
Breathtaking. I could never have imagined the joy that comes from simply observing animals and vegetation in their natural environment. Many mornings I found myself sitting quietly in the vehicle, grinning ear-to-ear in the early hours just taking in the moment and feeling grateful to be there.
✔️ Ranger:
David was exceptional and truly made the experience unforgettable. It was immediately clear that he takes enormous pride in his work as a ranger, and his passion for the reserve and its wildlife made every drive both educational and exciting. He is deeply knowledgeable, highly skilled, and the definition of a consummate professional. He shared a wealth of information about the animals, the ecosystem, and the reserve, and he has an impressive ability to read both wildlife behavior and the energy of the group.
Our group was lively and a bit rambunctious at times, and David managed that dynamic perfectly by engaging with us, keeping things fun, and maintaining clear professionalism and safety at all times. His calm confidence and situational awareness were evident throughout every drive. Whether we were observing a massive male lion up close or experiencing the adrenaline of a charging elephant, I always felt completely safe with him at the helm. His professionalism, judgment, and respect for the animals created the perfect balance between adventure and safety. His professionalism, knowledge, and leadership elevated every single safari drive. If you have the opportunity to go on safari with David, consider yourself very lucky.
✔️ Excursions:
While the excursions were optional, they truly should not be missed. We especially loved the day trip to St. Lucia, the National Park, the Lion Reserve, the Elephant Encounter, and of course the brewery. Each one added something unique to the overall experience.
✔️ Food:
The food on the property was good and exactly what you would expect from a quality all-inclusive resort.
✔️ Spa:
Don’t miss the massages. The 90-minute hot stone massage was incredible and the perfect way to unwind.
✔️ Service:
Impeccable. Every staff member we encountered was kind, patient, and helpful—even when our group was occasionally a bit loud and enthusiastic.

RECOMMENDATIONS:
Bring plenty of cash (U.S. dollars if you are American) for tipping. It’s helpful to read the gratuity guidance in advance. We were initially a little unclear about tipping for beverages at the point of sale, so we ended up leaving an additional tip for our servers at the end of the trip in addition to the recommended 15% for staff. We also tipped our massage therapist directly after the service.

FINAL THOUGHTS:
100% recommended.

The structure of the experience is thoughtfully designed and allows you to fully relax while still seeing and doing so much. I will absolutely be returning and will be recommending Zulu Nyala to everyone I know. I am already trying to convince my family that we all need to come back together.

A special thank you to David for making this an unforgettable safari experience.

KNOW the Zulu Nyala ANIMALS!
Giraffe - indlulamithi (Zulu)

- The Giraffe is the tallest land animal on Earth, with males reaching up to 5.5 m / 19 ft in height. Despite their long necks, they have the same number of neck vertebrae as us - seven! Their unique spot patterns are like fingerprints, with no two giraffes exactly alike, and their long, dark tongues can grow up to 45 cm / 17.7 in to help them feed on thorny trees. Gentle and graceful, giraffes can run surprisingly fast, reaching speeds of up to 55 km/h / 34 mi/h.

The giraffe most commonly found in KwaZulu-Natal is the South African Giraffe, a subspecies of the southern giraffe. It is recognised by its irregular star-shaped patches, lighter colouring below the knees, and large size.

SOCIAL STRUCTURE: they have a loose and flexible social structure known as a “fission-fusion” system, where groups frequently form and separate. Females and calves often stay in small nursery groups for protection, while males may roam alone or form bachelor groups. Unlike many herd animals, giraffes are generally calm and non-territorial, with individuals moving freely between groups across the landscape.

GESTATATION: about 15 months (around 450 days), one of the longest pregnancies among land mammals. Calves are usually born standing up, dropping nearly 2 m / 6.6 ft to the ground at birth - an incredible start to life in the wild! The Calves are usually suckled for about 9 to 12 months, although they begin nibbling on vegetation within a few weeks of birth. Even after weaning, young giraffes may stay close to their mothers for protection and guidance for well over a year.

GUEST REVIEW on Tripadvisor

Melinda H recently reviewed us, gave us a 5 star rating and posted this great selection of photos. Thanks for choosing us as your safari destination - to have been part of your lifetime dream is an honour.

RECOMMENDED - JUST DO IT!
I bid on the Safari at a charity auction to fulfil a lifetime dream of travelling from Australia to Africa and seeing the animals up close. Zulu Nyala did not disappoint!

We stayed in a Heritage Suite in the Heritage Lodge - the Game Lodge was being renovated. It was a fantastic experience from start to finish. The room was large, well appointed and quiet set amongst tranquil gardens. The pool area was beautiful and the gym was very well-equipped. This was needed after 3 buffet meals a day that were so delicious we could not help eating a lot. It is home-cooked, nutritious food, not fancy but yummy.

The games drives were amazing! It is a small park so you get to see lots of animals on each trip and our guide Sizwe was funny and very knowledgeable about the animals. We did a trip to a lion park and also a day trip to the large national park. We drove and ate with the same group all week and formed some lovely new friendships.

I had a deep tissue massage at the spa from a strong Zulu woman that unlocked back muscles that have been knotted up for years. A delightful experience and a wonderful 6 days. Recommended.

KNOW the Zulu Nyala ANIMALS!
Elephant - indlovu (Zulu)

Meet our beloved three ladies - Blanche, Sophia and Dorothy (named after characters from the TV production 'The Golden Girls'). Everyone who meets and spends time observing them in their natural habitat, falls in love!

The strong family bonds of the African Elephant are among the most remarkable in the animal kingdom. Led by an experienced matriarch, elephant herds are built on loyalty, protection, and deep social connections. Mothers, sisters, aunts, and calves remain closely connected, working together to care for and guide the young. Their gentle interactions, communication, and visible affection reveal an extraordinary level of intelligence and emotion.

Our excellent, experienced Rangers are wise and observant of animal behaviour, always putting guest and animal safety respectfully first.

BEST DAYS EVER!
This trip to Africa was amazing! Each day was the "Best Day Ever"! Zulu Nuala helped me and my friend plan our entire trip. Our flights and ground transportation were on time and everyone was very helpful.

The grounds on Zulu Nyala are beautiful and our accommodations were spacious with a very nice bathroom. The staff was friendly and answered all of our questions. The food was great and varied! We branched out and ate the exotic offerings and found them very tasty. The walking trails through the lodges were blooming and we saw giant snails, black impala, weaver birds, monkeys and the enclosed crocodile just walking from our room to the dining hall.

Once we met our guide, James, we began our safari. We loved every minute! James was a fountain of knowledge and so kind. We saw every animal on our bucket list but a leopard.

We took the hippo, elephant and cheetah excursions off site and enjoyed each one. I highly recommend them!! On site, we took a spa day and the massages were perfect.

I cannot say enough nice things about Zulu Nyala and the people that we met.

KNOW the Zulu Nyala ANIMALS!
Zebra - idube (Zulu)

The Plains Zebra plays an important role in the bush ecosystem as one of the first grazers to feed on long, coarse grasses. By trimming tougher grass, zebras make it easier for more selective grazers like wildebeest and antelope to feed on fresh new growth. Their constant movement and grazing patterns also help maintain healthy grasslands, supporting a wide variety of wildlife across the ecosystem.

Each zebra has a unique stripe pattern, much like a fingerprint, helping individuals recognise one another within a herd. Scientists also believe the stripes help confuse predators, regulate body temperature, and even deter biting insects - making them one of nature’s most fascinating designs.

They are often called the “clowns of the bush” because of their quirky appearance and comical behaviour. With their oversized heads, shaggy beards, skinny legs, and awkward-looking build, they already looks slightly mismatched. Add in their energetic bucking, sudden spinning, tail flicking, and playful running, and they often appear as though they are performing for an audience. Their unpredictable antics and expressive behaviour make them one of the most entertaining animals to watch on safari.

IF JOY HAD A POSTCODE, it might just be at Zulu Nyala Game Reserve!

From the moment we arrived, the place felt like a living nature documentary… except with better snacks and comfier beds. Speaking of which, the standard rooms were impressively spacious, spotless every day, and perfect for collapsing into after a day of adventure.

Now, let’s talk about the real star of the show: our ranger, Zulu Bheki. If safaris had superheroes, Bheki would be wearing the cape. Warm, attentive, and endlessly knowledgeable, he didn’t just guide us, he adopted us into the wild. Every fact he shared somehow stuck in our brains like safari souvenirs, and his passion made every drive feel like a story unfolding in real time.

We didn’t manage to spot the elusive hyena, but honestly, the chase was half the magic. There’s something unforgettable about racing through the bush with your heart doing drum solos, scanning the horizon like a detective in a nature thriller. It turned into one of those “you had to be there” moments that you’ll talk about for years.

Back at camp, the gardens were lush and beautifully kept, with local crocodiles casually adding a bit of prehistoric flair. The reserve offers plenty of excursions, but the cultural village on-site is an absolute must. It adds a whole new layer to the experience and is well worth your time.

Food-wise? Delicious. And the bar… let’s just say things got lively. The “liquid cocaine” shots definitely brought the party energy, and there’s a solid wine selection to keep things classy when needed.

All in all, we had an incredible time and are already plotting a return trip, next time with our little ones in tow. Just a quick tip for future visitors: bring some cash for tipping the amazing staff who make the whole experience shine.

An unforgettable adventure with a touch of wild magic. We’ll be back!
