There’s thirsty… and then there’s elephant thirsty. 🐘💦

An adult elephant can drink well over 100 litres of water in a single day, and when you consider the size of the equipment involved, that probably shouldn’t come as a surprise. Their trunks can draw up several litres at a time before pouring it straight into their mouths.

And at Zulu Nyala, you can get much closer to these incredible animals than simply watching them from a game vehicle.

Guests can add an off-site elephant interaction to their safari experience, where you’ll have the opportunity to meet Rachel & Rambo, rescued, free-living elephants, and learn more about them while touching and interacting with them up close.

Because seeing an elephant in the wild is unforgettable.

A minute in the wild. 🌿

There is something deeply humbling about simply being allowed to witness nature.

To watch a cheetah find its place in the branches of an old tree. To see elephants moving across the landscape together. To catch the last light of the day behind a giraffe, or sit quietly while the bush carries on around you, completely indifferent to your presence.

Nothing has been staged for you. Nothing is performing for the camera. These moments would have happened whether we were there to see them or not.

And perhaps that is what makes being in the wild so extraordinary.

For a little while, you become an observer of a world much bigger than your own. You slow down. You notice more. You remember that beyond our schedules, screens and everyday noise, life is unfolding constantly in ways that are ancient, beautiful and entirely beyond our control.

These photographs were captured by our rangers on their daily drives and excursions. Just a few moments from countless others that happen here every day.

Sometimes the greatest privilege of safari is simply being there to witness them.

This. And nowhere else to be. 🌿

There are very few places left where doing nothing feels like exactly what you should be doing.

Sitting beside a waterhole. Watching elephants arrive for a drink. Seeing other animals come and go. Listening to the sounds of the bush and realising that, for once, there is nowhere you need to rush to next.

No traffic. No inbox. No notifications demanding your attention. No feeling that you should be somewhere else.

Just this.

Captured at Tembe Elephant Park, one of the unforgettable excursions guests can add to their stay at Zulu Nyala, this is the kind of experience that reminds you just how good it feels to slow down.

Safari has a way of returning life to a pace we seem to have forgotten. You start noticing the small things again. The changing light. A distant call. The movement of an elephant’s trunk through the water. The silence between sounds.

And somewhere in all that stillness, you reconnect. With nature, with the people beside you, and perhaps a little with yourself too.

Sometimes getting away isn’t about doing more.

It’s about finally having the time to do less.

This. And nowhere else to be.

It’s funny how you can look at the same landscape a hundred times and still notice something you’ve never seen before.

We get used to what’s around us. We stop looking closely. We assume we already know what’s there.

Then something shifts, and suddenly you see it differently.

There’s always more to unfold and uncover than meets the eye.

The same is true within.

An elephant’s idea of a light snack is… ambitious. 🐘

In the wild, elephants can spend 12–18 hours a day feeding, working their way through grasses, leaves, bark, roots, twigs and fruit. An adult can eat well over 100 kg of vegetation in a single day, so sometimes simply picking the leaves isn’t going to cut it.

Those trunks and tusks are remarkably effective tools for snapping branches, stripping bark and pushing over smaller trees to reach the good stuff. It might look like terrible table manners, but this constant browsing also helps shape the landscape, opening up dense vegetation and changing the habitat for other species.

So yes, our landscaping department has received the complaint.

They’ve chosen to ignore it.

Hippos have somehow managed to look simultaneously adorable and deeply concerning; and frankly, we respect the range.

And apparently, no matter where we come from, there’s one instinct that unites us all: the second someone lights a braai, we know. 🔥👀

Suddenly everyone’s casually wandering over to investigate what’s on the grid.

Turns out giraffes are even more ridiculous when you get to know them. 🦒

Seven neck bones. A tongue that can reach around 50 cm. A heart powerful enough to send blood all the way up that neck. Very little sleep. And a coat pattern nobody else in the world is wearing.

Basically, giraffes took a perfectly normal animal blueprint and said, “Make it taller.”

And somehow, it worked beautifully.

The best ideas rarely arrive when they’re scheduled to.

Sometimes they emerge when the laptops close, the walls disappear and the conversation moves somewhere entirely unexpected.

Out in the wild, something shifts. Titles become less important. Conversations become more honest. Teams share experiences that have nothing to do with deadlines, targets or the next meeting, and somehow return to them with a different perspective.

At Zulu Nyala, a conference can still have everything business requires. But beyond the meeting room lies a private game reserve, where game drives become shared adventures, evenings unfold beneath the African sky and colleagues have the space to reconnect as people.

There are wildlife encounters that stay with you long after they’re over. 🐆

A visit to the Hluhluwe Cheetah Centre offers Zulu Nyala guests the opportunity to see some of Africa’s remarkable wild cats up close, while learning more about the work being done to care for, rehabilitate and protect them.

And while the cheetah in this video may appear particularly affectionate, there’s an important bit of context: the person receiving those rather enthusiastic licks is the owner of the centre. Guests are not normally permitted to touch or interact physically with the animals.

What visitors do get is something just as special: the chance to observe these magnificent cats at close range, hear their stories and gain a deeper appreciation for the conservation of Africa’s wild cat species.

Because your safari story doesn’t have to end at the reserve gates.

There is so much more of Zululand to discover. 🌿
