One of the greatest joys of a safari experience is looking beyond the large animals and discovering the nuanced world of birding. Bold colours, intricate behaviours, and melodious calls are just a few reasons to appreciate them. Here are a few species you can learn about before you embark on your next safari.
1. African Hoopoe - The African Hoopoe is a shy, beautiful bird most often seen probing the ground with its long, slender bill in search of food.
2. White-Backed Vulture - These giant birds are highly endangered, spotted hundreds of metres up in the sky, covering great distances in search of food.
3. Helmeted Guineafowl - Travelling in large groups and foraging on the ground, these birds are hard to miss. Their noisy calls often mark the dawn and dusk chorus.
4. Black-Collared Barbet - With a diet comprised largely of fruit, the canopy of large fruiting trees is the best place to spot these striking birds.
5. Red-Crested Korhaan - This large, ground-dwelling bird is best known for its piercing call, heard repeatedly during the warmer months.
6. Yellow-Billed Hornbill - These curious, intelligent birds are a welcome sight around every corner. Their large beaks are used to forage and hunt a variety of prey, from insects to mice, frogs, and small snakes.
7. Yellow-Billed Oxpecker - Not to be confused with the more common Red-Billed Oxpecker, spotting these rarer birds is always a welcome treat. They are most often seen on large buffalo herds, picking ticks from the hides of these great bovines.
8. Cape Glossy Starling - Boldly iridescent, numerous, and intelligent, these birds are often seen following large herbivores through vegetation to hawk the insects disturbed in their wake. Their striking hues of blue and purple are caused by light refracting off their feathers.
9. Lilac-Breasted Roller - A favourite of many, these incredibly beautiful birds are scattered throughout the savannah, often seen perched at a vantage point, scanning for their next meal.
