Struwig Eco-Reserve History

The testator, Mr Petrus Cornelius Struwig, a well known farmer, businessman and figure in Afrikaner cultural circles in the Hartswater region of the Northern Cape, aquired some properties in the then so called Transvaal Lowveld from 1963 to 1972. Amongst the properties puchased were portions of the bushveld farms Zeekoegat, Dundee, Lisbon and Klipheuvel – in extent about 3900 hectares – all unimproved and covered with all kinds of game.

He origanaly built himself a cottage on the farm Dundee, near the present border with the Klaserie Game Reserve, but when he bought the portion of the farm Zeekoegat, he relocated to where we now have the “Uitsig” house. As his marraige with his wife, “Tannie Lettie”, was childless, he allowed his family and in-laws to also errect some cottages on the bank of the Olifants River which today forms the ”Oewer” camp. “Oom” Bullie, as he was known amongst family and friends, and his family used these farms as their hunting grounds in the winter months, whilst during the summer they spent on his sea farm near Hummansdorp in the Cape.

When he died on 12 December 1975 he left these Lowveld properties in his will in a testamentary trust, called the Petrus cornelius Struwig Testamentary Trust (or Struwig Trust) to five Afrikaans Cultural organisations nl. The Federasie van Afrikaanse Kultuurverenigings (a federaration of cultural organisations), the Afrikaanse Volksang- en Volksdansevereniging ( folk dancing), the Kerk Jeug Aksie of the NG Church (church youth organisation), the Voortrekker Beweging (cultural youth organisation) and the Junior Rapportryersbeweging (youth organisation for young people between school and 35 years old).

From 1976 to 1995 the properties were only utelized for hunting whilst some disputes were sorted out. The family and in-laws got property rights on the portions of the farm Heuvelkruin ( about 926 ha), in exchange for their hunting rights, and the Struwig Trust was left with the remaining about 3000 ha. In 1995/6 the first two organisations mentioned above, wanted out and a company was interested in buying their shares. A property company, named Struwig Bosveldplaas (Pty) Ltd, was formed and the remaining properties were transfered to the company. 40% of the shares in this company was sold to Bonanza Farms (Pty) Ltd, in respect off the exiting organisations, and the other 60% remained in the name of Struwig Trust. Eventualy it was decided it was better for the parties to split. To effect the split and to unbundle the shareholding it was decided to sell the Lisbon property, to create capital for Struwig Trust, and then the rest of the properties were subdivided as payment for the 40% shareholding of Bonanza Farms. The capital thus created was used to up grade the camp to its current format and to build a youth hostel to accommodate member organisations’ youth members.

Thus the STRUWIG Trust now owns 948 ha under the consolidated title deed of the farm Struwigsrus 411 KU. Struwigsrus forms part of the Balule reserve which is in turn part of the APNR and Greater Kruger National Park. We are part of a two million hectare conservation area where animals roam free of human boundaries.
