With natural water still limited across the landscape, reliable water sources become busy meeting places. Buffalo, lion and antelope arriving to drink, sometimes within the same stretch of an afternoon. Once the rains arrive, those patterns begin to change.

Six wild dogs entered the boma as strangers. They left it as a pack.

Two females from remote Malawi. Four bonded males from KwaZulu-Natal. Brought together as part of a carefully managed conservation effort to strengthen genetic diversity and help secure the future of one of Africa’s most endangered carnivores.

Then the gate opened.

Today, all six are moving together through Karongwe — a new pack, a stronger bloodline, and another step towards a wilder, more connected landscape.

The return flight has begun. A flash of blue through the bushveld. The Broad-billed Roller is back at Karongwe — one of the seasonal travellers that indicates the changing of seasons.

Some journeys cross borders. Others span continents. And somehow, the wild knows when it’s time to return.

On World Migratory Bird Day, we’re celebrating the summer visitors that are beginning to find their way back to Karongwe.

You see one. Then three more appear, because guinea fowl rarely travel solo. A group of them is often called a "confusion".

No one's quite sure where the name came from, but anyone who's watched a flock scatter, all calling at once, can probably guess. These birds are highly social. They forage together, keep in touch with soft contact calls as they move through the grass, and roost side by side in the trees at night. More eyes means more chance of spotting danger. When one bird sees a threat, its rattling alarm call alerts the whole flock and every other animal nearby.

In the bushveld, there's safety in numbers. And a little confusion too.

A river doesn't stop because it reaches the edge of a reserve. Neither does an ecosystem.

Karongwe forms part of the UNESCO-recognised Kruger to Canyons Biosphere — a much larger living landscape where rivers, habitats, wildlife and people are connected in ways that extend far beyond any one reserve.

The boundaries may be ours. The landscape has always been connected.
