d, we’re energy efficient. Solar-powered. Water-wise. The Timbavati Private Nature Reserve is part of a connected wildlife area spanning over 2 million hectares. It’s also private conservation land. Which means fewer guests. Fewer vehicles. Less impact on the earth. It also means more intimate and up-close encounters with wildlife. Better conversations around the fire. More attention to your needs and enjoyment.

Our beloved Tanda Tula turns 50. Where have the years gone?

Don and I set out to write a single piece to mark the occasion, and went wandering through the archives to find it. But somewhere among the old brochures, the papers and the early write-ups, we realised one story could never hold it all. This journey is far richer than that – and we'd like to share it with you over the months to come. The funny, the embarrassing, the proud, the unforgettable. All of it.

Just look at these vintage photographs, and the marketing language of another era. "Pukka punkah fans turning slowly in the heat. Wall-to-wall wild animals. A ploughman's lunch served in a treehouse. Direct-dial telephones. Guests watching lions feed from 'the truck'."

Oh, how we have laughed! And cried. We've come so far, and learned so much. But through all of it, we have stayed true to ourselves, and to what we were called to do.

This is our living legacy.

Today we begin the series with an introduction, to set the scene for everything that follows. Come and take this walk into the past with us.

With love, Nina and Don

The Condé Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Awards are voted for entirely by guests. Every vote is a genuine reflection of lived experience.

At Tanda Tula, we have always believed that it is the unscripted moments that last the longest. The ones you didn't plan for, and couldn't have. The ones you are still thinking about (and feeling), long after returning home.

If Tanda Tula has gifted you this, we would be so grateful for your vote.

Click the link below, search for 'Tanda Tula Safari Camp' and cast your vote. It only takes a minute.

Moving day in the Timbavati. One of the Sark Breakaway females relocating her cub to a new den along the Zebenine riverbed.

Seven cubs were born to the pride in February, and the mothers have been busy ever since — hunting, nursing, and keeping this little group tucked safely out of sight.

Autumn in the Timbavati is its own kind of season. The grasses go golden, the mornings turn crisp, and the impala rut fills the air with something between chaos and theatre. There is also the small matter of the night sky, which at this time of year is as clear as it gets.

Seven cubs. Two mamas. One very full morning on drive. 🐾

The Sark Breakaway Pride is thriving and as happy as ever.

A valiant, albeit failed, effort to help grow the rhino population. He only ended up contributing a few more greenhouse gases to the atmosphere.
