Some safari days are best finished on the water.

Ruzizi Tented Lodge sits among palms and fig trees on the shore of Lake Ihema in Akagera National Park. Ask anyone who's done one: a walking safari changes how you see the bush.

Single file, an arm's length apart, mostly silent – you move through the landscape rather than past it. Your guide reads the ground like a newspaper, pointing out tracks, signs and stories most vehicles drive straight over. Dangerous animals are given a wide berth, and the risk is lower than you'd think – experienced guides know exactly how to keep a walk safe.

6 things to know about the Okavango Delta

1. It floods in the dry season. Water from Angola's highlands takes months to arrive, so the Delta peaks between June and August – exactly when the rest of the bushveld has dried out.

2. The Delta never reaches the sea. Instead of flowing into an ocean, the Delta spreads out and evaporates into the Kalahari sands – one of the world's few major inland deltas.

3. Over 510 bird species have been recorded here, from the striking slaty egret to the ever-watchful secretarybird.

4. You can explore it by mokoro – a traditional dugout canoe, poled quietly through the reeds for a view of the Delta most vehicles never reach.

5. It's proper Big 5 territory, alongside cheetah, wild dog and both spotted and brown hyena – a rare spread of predators in one ecosystem.

6. Botswana built its tourism model around low density, not high volume – which is why so many Okavango lodges sit on private, exclusive concessions.
