RARE WHITE LION cub sighting with our guests this week! White lions in South Africa are a rare color variant of the Southern African lion rather than a separate species or albino. Unlike true albinos, white lions usually retain normal pigment in their eyes (often golden, hazel, or bluish) and skin. A recessive gene mutation causes a lack of color pigmentation in the fur. They are endemic to the Klaserie and Timbavati Nature Reserve regions in northeastern South Africa, where local oral traditions have revered them for over 400 years. (The Ross Pride had this gene and they had quite a few cubs in the years weβve been at Baobab Ridge, unfortunately non of them made it to adulthood. The two Ross boys, the only surviving cubs, fathered further white cubs, but sadly left the Klaserie Reserve a few years ago)
