THE ULTIMATE GRAVITY-DEFYING CLIMBER... Geckos climbing glass may look like magic or the use of secret superglue, but it is actually pure physics. The underside of a gecko's foot consists of millions of microscopic hairs called setae.
Each individual hair splits into hundreds of even smaller, nanoscale tips called spatulae. When the gecko presses its toe pads against the glass, these billions of sub-microscopic tips get so incredibly close to the surface that they trigger van der Waals forces - temporary electrical attractions that occur at the atomic level between the molecules of the foot and the glass.
