Caught on last night’s drive: a male leopard perched high in a marula tree, letting the darkness know who’s in charge.

Meet the Southern Ground Hornbill: The Thunderbird of the Bush*

If you’ve ever heard a deep, booming _oom-oom-oom_ echo across the savanna at dawn, you’ve heard him.

Some facts about this incredible bird:

*1. Ancient & Endangered*
They’re Africa’s largest hornbill and have been around for over 2 million years. They’re also listed as Endangered, because they breed incredibly slowly — a pair might only raise 1 chick every 9 years.

*2. That famous red face*
The bright red wattle and eye-ring aren’t just for show. The pouch amplifies their calls so it can carry up to 3km across open plains. Males have all-red wattles like this one; females have a blue patch in the middle.

*3. Ground-dwellers, not tree-hoppers*
Unlike other hornbills, they spend 90% of their time walking. They patrol huge territories on foot, hunting snakes, tortoises, insects, and small mammals with that massive black bill.

*4. Loyal for life*
They mate for life and live in small family groups. The whole group helps raise chicks, and juveniles will stay with their parents for up to 6 years to learn how to survive.

*5. They’re ecosystem engineers*
By eating lots of insects and small reptiles, they help keep the bush in balance. Their deep calls are also called “the sound of wild Africa” for a reason.

Seeing one perched like this, silhouetted against the sky, is pure bushveld magic.
