Welcome to the SIYAFUNDA SLOG 🦏
8th - 9th August 2026

Women in Conservation

An unforgettable two-day walking challenge through the breathtaking Makalali Game Reserve in Limpopo, South Africa.

Jobs halt camp and Siyafunda are privileged to play a part in this awesome production.

After almost a year of development, it brings me great pride to announce my documentary directorial debut- "Call of the Wild".
The documentary will premiere on 25 August 2023 at the prestigious Silwerskermfees in one of the six coveted spots for original documentaries. This is the first year documentaries will be featured on the blue carpet, and I am so lucky to share this incredible platform with 5 other esteemed documentary film-makers (many of whom are titans of industry).
How do you experience an African sunset or describe the wealth of animals, plants, birds and landscapes of the bush if you are born blind? "Call of the Wild" explores this question by taking Anika Barnard –a young visually impaired girl with a remarkable knack for language and bird calls- on the first ever documented safari for the blind. Designed by soundscape specialists Derek Solomon and Sarah Solomon, this incredible sound safari experience, filmed for both able-sighted and blind viewers, will make you listen to the sounds of the African bush as if hearing it for the first time.
The documentary also features birding extraordinaire Daniel Keith Danckwerts, with beautiful music provided by Daniel Keith Geddes- because everyone knows two Daniel Keiths are better than one.
After 11 years of writing musicals, its been wonderful to flex my journalistic muscles again- using this method of storytelling with a very theatrical flare. Due to the subject matter, this documentary is uniquely designed as either a visual or audial experience- a great challenge indeed, as its equally important to showcase the grandeur of the African Wild both in visual scale and in enormously rich sound.
In order to realise this technical undertaking, you need a brilliant crew. I was extraordinarily lucky to work with the abundantly talented Dean Hibbert, Renier Van Niekerk, Nate Shoof, Ben-Nathan Ras, Ryno De Weerdt, Kerry Waldorf and De Wyk Pretorius who showcase such beautiful craft in bringing this vision to life.
We were also extremely lucky to facilitate this special experience with Mike At Siyafunda at his untouched guide training camp in the greater Makalali Reserve. The richness and diversity in this reserve provided us with a cinematic backdrop like no other!
Thank you to our sponsors at Oryx Trailer Rentals for equipping us for our rugged adventure, and thank you to the team at IdeaCandy and Silwerskermfees for this once in a lifetime opportunity, and for trusting me throughout!
Lastly, I cannot wait for you to meet my breathtaking leading lady- Anika's story is altogether sad, remarkable, inspirational and beautiful. The opportunity to experience this all with her was one of the most gratifying and emotional processes, and it was such an honour to be able to work with her and her delightful family!
All thats left to say is: Are you listening carefully?
