We are fortunate at Sandringham Private Game Reserve to have well above-average numbers of active vulture nests scattered throughout the reserve. White-backed and Hooded Vultures are the species we see most often, building their stick nests in large trees along the rivers and drainage lines. Every so often, however, White-headed, Lappet-faced and cliff-nesting Cape Vultures also make an appearance, particularly when the resident lion prides bring down a large animal such as a giraffe.

Light, water and the colours of the bush find their way into every corner of the Shisaka Villas.

Set along the banks of the Timbavati River, each Villa has two beautifully appointed bedrooms and generous shared living spaces opening onto a wide timber deck, private infinity pool and sunken lounge. Soft blues and greys echo the water, while stone, polished screed and timber bring warmth and texture to the interiors.

Above, the distinctive rooftop sala offers a secluded perch from which to watch the bush below. And when it is time to head out, a private safari team – dedicated ranger and tracker – and private vehicle allow the experience to unfold entirely around you.

The Marabou Stork may not be the prettiest bird in South Africa, but there is no denying how magnificent it is in flight. With a wingspan of up to 2.5 metres, a weight of around 7 kilograms and a height of about 1.5 metres, these impressive birds are powerful fliers. Using thermals to soar as high as 1,500 metres, they can remain airborne for long periods, covering impressive distances with ease.

An afternoon well spent in the Timbavati River. Viewed from the Hide in front of the Main Lodge, this herd of elephants made the most of the water – cooling off, splashing and playing, with Shisaka Camp visible just across the river. One of those wonderful Sandringham moments where the setting and the wildlife come together quite naturally.

With N’weti Camp clearly visible across the Timbavati River, this angle puts its unique location beautifully into context. Wildlife moves freely through the landscape around us, and sometimes a sighting gives you a wonderful sense of just how close the safari experience really is.

Emerging from the riverbed after lounging around for a while the Black Dam Pride was on the move. These lions are incredibly rewarding to track as they seem to be constantly on the move through the reserve. Finding them is always a fantastic completion to a story built around the tracks and signs left behind and interpreted by the tracker and guide team.
