Winter evenings at Kings Camp are all about atmosphere.

There's nothing quite like a thoughtfully prepared dinner after returning from a chilly game drive next to the glow of the fire and the sounds of the bush at night.

Places like the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve remain wild because of the ongoing work of conservation teams, reserve staff, guides and local communities working together to protect them.

June marks the start of the dry winter safari season in the Timbavati. Cooler mornings, golden afternoons and thinning vegetation create exceptional conditions for game viewing, with wildlife becoming easier to spot around water sources.

It’s also one of the most comfortable times of year to spend long hours on safari, returning to fireside dinners and quiet evenings beneath clear winter skies.

Here is Cameron’s review in full:

“The most incredible trip ever! My husband and I chose Kings Camp for our first ever Safari, and we are so so happy. Everything went above and beyond our expectations. Kings Camp truly has made this experience a luxurious 5-star one, from start to finish. Everything is so carefully thought out. The lodge was gorgeous! Every single one of the staff was so kind, always smiling, and always attentive. The food was so impressive, and we always had such amazing options. The honeymoon suite was absolutely gorgeous.

Now for the Safari - what an unreal experience! I have never been so excited to wake up at 5am. Julia was our guide, and Ronald was our tracker - both incredibly knowledgeable and the best! We did 8 total drives, and each one was special in their own way. Julia went out of her way to ensure we saw everything we wanted to! From baby lion cubs, baby hippos, to herds of buffalo, elephants, impala and zebra. We saw hyenas feeding on a kudu, and a leopard with an impala. Outstanding in every aspect.

I am at a loss for words from this Safari. On our last morning, I was certainly emotional that we had to leave. Thank you to every single person at Kings Camp who made this a trip we will never ever forget. Absolutely recommend, and we cannot wait to return!”

Meet Kings Camp Field Guide, Julia Love

Julia joined the team in 2025, bringing with her a natural warmth and a deep curiosity for the bush. Originally from KwaZulu-Natal, her early years were spent along the coast, but regular visits to game reserves sparked a lasting connection to the natural world.

After school, guiding felt like a natural path. She began her career in a front-of-house role, where she developed a strong sense of hospitality and an intuitive understanding of guest experience. Today, she brings that same attentiveness to the field, combining knowledge, observation and an easy connection with those she hosts.

Julia’s approach to guiding is thoughtful and engaging, shaped as much by her understanding of people as it is by her passion for wildlife.

Leave her some love in the comments!

Autumn afternoons on safari are best spent in the Kings Warren.

Complete with a coffee and tea station, plenty of wildlife books to study up from and cameras to notify you of incoming wildlife - this is the place to be when not on the game viewing vehicle.

We'd love to know what you saw when in the hide at Kings Camp? Let us know below.

Few safari moments compare to the thrill of spotting a leopard in the wild. In the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve, the combination of thick riverine vegetation, quiet game paths and expert guiding and tracking creates exceptional opportunities to encounter these elusive big cats.

In the safari world, many places are described as untouched. In the case of the Timbavati, there is real history behind that idea.

The Timbavati Private Nature Reserve was formally established in the 1950s, and over time became part of the wider Greater Kruger ecosystem through the removal of fences, allowing wildlife to move freely across a vast, protected landscape. While much of South Africa’s wilderness has required restoration, this area has long been managed with a focus on conservation and ecological continuity.

Today, its biodiversity reflects decades of protection, careful stewardship and respect for the natural rhythms of the bush.
