South Africa’s natural forests cover 0.5% of our land, yet they support an extraordinary amount of biodiversity and play a critical role in maintaining clean water systems. In the Amathole region, these forests are under pressure from historical logging, land-use change, and invasive species.

The Cape Parrot Forest Restoration Programme (CPFRP) is a long-term, integrated programme combining habitat recovery, water catchment management, and community-based implementation to support Cape Parrot conservation. Through this work, we are restoring degraded forest habitat while strengthening biodiversity, water systems, and local livelihoods.

Our approach combines the clearing of invasive species, assisting natural regeneration and planting of locally sourced indigenous trees, guiding recovery toward a resilient forest. Seedlings are grown from seeds collected in nearby forests and propagated in community-supported nurseries.

In 2025, this work expanded across key forest sites, with over 8,000 indigenous trees planted and more than 80 conservation-linked income opportunities supported in the Hogsback area.
