Elundini Backpackers

Elundini Backpackers A creative hub for travellers/artists and free spirits to experience Xhosa culture/architecture/art Electricity is generated from our solar panels.

Only 20 minutes away from Hogsback, high in the Amatola Mountains lies the picturesque Xhosa village of Elundini. Created from the desire to show tourists the 'other side' of South Africa, this backpackers has it all. Great views, yummy food, cozy vibes and most of all...the exchange of cultural experiences makes it all a difference. Elundini Backpackers is a community orientated and an eco-friend

ly backpackers. We are almost completely of the grid and depend mostly on renewable energy. Solar geysers and our 'donkey' are warming up our water. Rain water is harvested from the roof and stored in tanks. We also use rain water for drinking. We do not have flushing toilets but use compost toilets instead. All water is recycled. All our rondavels are build in the traditional way with thatched roofs and cow and dung walls and floors. In the main building we use natural finishes such as wooden tiles, cane and natural stone found in the area. All traditional building materials are bought locally within a distance of 30 km. In this way we try to minimize our carbon footprint!! All our activities are organised by the people from the local community through their 100% self-owned business.

Our Buddies visited the arts faculty at Fort Hare University to learn about South African history and view the exhibit of African leaders who studied there, including Nelson Mandela, Robert Mugabe, and Robert Sobukwe. After the tour, we went shopping at a local supermarket, then headed straight to the Backpackers to explore. The young artists couldn't stop creating because their creative juices were flowing.

A big thanks to Dr. Thozama April and Siphosethu Gift Plam for welcoming us and guiding us through these informative and educational exhibitions.

Beneath the expansive night sky in rural Africa, where the darkness is pure and unspoiled, the Milky Way and countless stars illuminate the heavens. This celestial display, far from the lights of the city, offers a breathtaking and serene experience, showcasing the natural beauty of the universe.

🌟 Gratitude Post 🌟

Big thanks to Nonzukiso, an exceptional Xhosa lesson facilitator, who recently volunteered in our village during her school holidays to boost her tourism portfolio while studying tourism in Joburg. Her dedication and efforts have made a remarkable impact, and we are truly grateful for her contributions.

Nonzukiso's commitment to teaching Xhosa and taking our guests to local businesses and cultural activities was truly inspiring. Her passion for tourism shone through as she shared her knowledge and immersed our guests in our village's rich culture and heritage.

By giving back to our village and actively seeking ways to further develop her skills, Nonzukiso demonstrated her genuine care for others and her unwavering drive for success in the tourism industry. Her selfless actions have left a lasting impression on all of us.

She is a shining example of how passion and initiative can create meaningful experiences for both visitors and the local community. We have no doubt that her studies and future endeavors will bring her great success.

Thank you, Sisi, for your invaluable contributions to our village. We are grateful for the knowledge and insights you shared and the positive impact you made. Wishing you continued success in your studies and beyond!

Till we meet again

Directly translated, imbeleko describes the act of giving birth. In Xhosa culture, imbeleko is a traditional ceremony where the umbilical cord and afterbirth of a newborn baby are buried on ancestral grounds as a means of introducing the baby to their clan, their ancestors, and their elders. Burying the umbilical cord is said to at once protect the child from witchcraft or sorcery and bring them into their ancestral lineage.
