Ask just about anyone who’s been here, and they’ll tell you that this is one of the vibiest little South African towns.

The Commercial Hotel has hosted everything from weddings and birthdays to serving the local community and national and international visitors.

That’s over a century of cold beers, long conversations, and Hopefield stories - and we know many of you have your own.

The monogram was always there. We just had to look.

Even when the hotel traded its name for Hopefield Lodge in the 1990s, the original CH monogram, forged into the reception railings, had been there all along.

Then a customer arrived with a gift: a vintage teapot from the Commercial Hotel Villiersdorp, a sister institution long since gone.

The name came back, and the restoration continued.

Today, 30 years after the Van der Westhuizen family first made Hopefield their home, the Commercial Hotel stands as one of South Africa’s best-preserved mid-century hotels, and still very much the heart of this community.

Nearly lost to a 1990s renovation, the Commercial Hotel survived by chance.

Wessie van der Westhuizen had plans for a thatched roof and a new name, Hopefield Lodge, but life had other plans.

When his son Jacques took over in 2011, the original floors, fittings, and furniture made it remarkably easy for the hotel to be restored to its 1970s glory.

The name came back too, inspired by the CH logo on the reception railings and a vintage teapot from the Commercial Hotel Villiersdorp.

A heritage worth holding on to.
