Born and bred in the Eastern Cape, Humansdorp, Elmo grew up spending many hours with his father in the families woodworking factory. His father was a builder and carpenter who manufactured his own joinery for the houses he build in St Francis Bay. As a boy Elmo enjoyed working with his hands and learning from his d
ad, who had a love for furniture. He could work with the woodworking machines at a very young age and found it most joyful and very satisfying. At the age of 26, in 1993, Elmo decided that he wants to make a living manufacturing furniture. His father allowed him to use space in the factory which was vacant at the time. So with a few conventional machines Elmo and four helpers, a humble beginning of Elmo’s Furniture was initiated. Three of the four workers are still working for the company. One passed away 2 years ago. In 1994 Elmo bought his first brand new machine. The year thereafter another new machine was bought at a price which was quite staggering for that time - one could purchase a house for the same amount of money! At that stage the company produced doors, decorative mouldings and solid wood furniture. Making furniture was then still in its growing stages and different types of woods were used. In 1999 the change over was completed and the company was now making furniture only in a few selective woods namely oak and ash and some other hard timbers such as kiaat and rose wood. The company was steadfastly growing and it was evident that it was time to expand. January 2006 the factory was relocated onto its new premises into a 3 000 m2 factory and in 2008 the factory was further extended to 3 680m2 During this time some new modern machines were purchased. Technology such as CAD, www, e-mail, becoming the norm in the new millennium and with out which none of us can operate lately, it was inevitable to buy CNC machinery. CNC machines would enable us to, among others, produce sophisticated chairs, previously imported, at a much quicker pace, eliminating almost completely the time-consuming and effect of the human being. Buying new modern European machines on a annually help us to ensure the we can succeed in our mission of continuous improvement. Over the years we have supplied: selective retailers, Restaurants, Coffee Shops, B&B, Hotels and Decorators with our furniture. It is our vision to grow our market share in these sectors and build relationships with the same passion that we have for wood furniture. CHANGE, keeps us moving ahead.
