1920 Fashion at The New Vaalharts Museum
• The "Flapper" movement: Young women challenged traditional expectations. Shorter skirts, bobbed hair, makeup, and dancing to jazz became symbols of independence and confidence.
• Art Deco: The geometric lines, metallic embellishments, and luxurious beadwork seen in many dresses reflected the bold, modern Art Deco style that influenced architecture, jewellery, and fashion.
• Ancient Egypt: The discovery of King Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922 sparked a fascination with Egyptian motifs. Designers incorporated lotus flowers, scarabs, geometric borders, and rich decorative patterns into clothing and jewellery.
• Hollywood and Jazz: Silent film stars and jazz performers popularized glamorous evening wear with sequins, fringe, feathers, and long strings of pearls.
Looking specifically at this collection, the bridal gown in the centre is very representative of the late 1920s. It features:
• A dropped waistline.
• Soft layers of chiffon and lace.
• Long pearl necklaces.
• Elbow-length gloves.
• A Juliet-style veil with floral headpiece instead of a traditional high tiara.
• A slim, youthful silhouette rather than the hourglass shape of earlier decades.
These details reflect a period when brides wanted to appear elegant, modern, and sophisticated rather than heavily structured.
