The ocean doesn’t always get the final say.

When the wind turns, the tide shifts or the kids still have energy to burn, the session simply moves back to Surfstar.
It’s officially the driveway. Unofficially, it has exactly the kind of skate-ramp energy that makes a skateboard very difficult to ignore.

Surfboards. Skateboards. Repeat.

There’s usually one person who ends up making breakfast for everyone.

At Surfstar, it doesn’t always have to be them.
Each pod has a fully equipped kitchen for the mornings when you feel like cooking, and breakfast is available on request for the mornings when pouring the coffee is quite enough effort.
Because self-catering should still feel like a holiday for the person who usually does the catering.

We have the house rules.
These are the ones we prefer.

1. Losing an hour to the view is time well spent.
2. If you can see Supertubes from where you’re standing, it counts as research.
3. Your board has its own room. So you don’t have to share yours.
4. A good swell is a perfectly valid reason to rearrange the schedule.
5. Shoes are optional. Good coffee is not.

And the only official rule?
Make yourself at home.

THE SHORELINE KEEPS SECRETS.

The waves might be what put J-Bay on the map.
But some of its smallest treasures are hiding right under your feet.
More than 400 species of shells can be found along the beaches here - from tiny micro-shells to local varieties with names like baby toes and false teeth.

There’s even a whole museum dedicated to them.
So next time you’re walking the beach, look down as well as out, and visit the shell museum with a collection of around 2,000 species from across the world.

Holiday listings rarely tell you how well you’ll sleep.
At Surfstar, the ocean may be the first thing you notice, but after a full J-Bay day, it’s the comfortable bed, fresh linen and calm bedroom you appreciate most.

A beautiful view makes the morning. A proper night’s sleep makes the holiday.

While the surfers are checking tides, winds and swell charts, you have an entirely different J-Bay itinerary waiting.

Coffee in town. A walk along the Point. Local shops worth browsing. A day trip to nearby Nyosi Wildlife Reserve. An afternoon beside the pool - and first choice of where to sit when the braai begins.

You don’t need to surf to understand why people keep returning to J-Bay.
