What do you think Madiba would admire most about the women of South Africa today?
It is a simple question, yet one that carries generations of history.
Before there was a Father of the Nation, there were the women who raised him. Women who nurtured his values, strengthened his character and taught him the importance of compassion, resilience and community. Their influence reminds us that behind every great leader are those whose quiet strength helped shape the person they would become.
The women of South Africa today stand on the shoulders of those who came before them. Women who marched, sacrificed, persevered and believed in a future they may never fully see, so that the generations after them could dream more freely, live more boldly and rise even higher.
The young women sharing their reflections in this video are part of our internship programme, an initiative that allows us to invest in young people by creating opportunities for them to learn, grow and build their futures. In doing so, we hope to play our own small part in ensuring that the legacy of those who came before us continues to create opportunities for those who come after.
As we honour Women's Day, we remember that legacy is not only something we look back on. It is something we actively build.
Perhaps the greatest way we can honour the women who came before us is by becoming the kind of women they hoped we would be. Women who recognise their own worth, champion one another, create opportunities and lift others as they rise.
The story of South African women is still being written. And the next chapter belongs to them.
Happy Women's Day to the women who came before us, the women shaping today, and the women who will carry tomorrow forward.
