The owner of Lilogo Lodge has a long history in the development sector in South Africa and has adopted many principles which guide social, economic and environmental development. Lilogo implements a business model which adheres to the principles of sustainable and responsible tourism and fair trade. Lodge as environmentally friendly as possible the following aspects of the Lodge are carefully managed: lighting, heating, maintenance, supplies, and waste. The lighting makes use of a combination of energy efficient and low voltage bulbs. While the Lodge has not yet installed solar as a source for energy, it does use gas as an alternate source which is a cleaner energy option. Low flow shower heads and dual flush toilet systems are in place to manage water. Waste is managed through separation and recycling where possible to minimize the volume of waste sent to the landfill. In addition all organic waste is used for composting for the garden. Lilogo Lodge is well maintained to prevent such things as leaky taps and unnecessary loss of heat. The minial funds received from out recycling efforts are being used to buy trees to green previously disadvantaged communities through a partnership being developed with a community nursery in Alexandra. In addition guests are encouraged to make a donation to support this greeing initiative. In addition Lilogo showcases the efforts of Ashoka Fellows, social entrepreneurs whose efforts are making great positive change in development in South Africa. Tours to Ashoka Felllows projects and communities can also be arranged. Lilogo also educates guests through literature on site to living green and reducing their carbon footprints.
