In English, an apostrophe (') serves two basic functions;
1. it show possession - Shakespeare's book,my father's car, etc); and
2. it shows that letters have been removed from the original words to form a contraction, e.g. It's my Mandela's birthday... instead of IT IS Mandela's birthday , or you're my best friend YOU ARE my best friend. Easy, isn't it?
An apostrophe is not usually used to form plural nouns. It is therefore incorrect to say I bought two pen's for the exam; or I have four brother's and for sister's. We SIMPLY say pens, and brothers and sisters...
